Just ordered a Mountain Hunter. Use will be mostly 600 yes or less. Looking for opinions on a good scope for that use. Lightweight, reasonable close in ability, and solidly built. Looked at a Nightforce NXS but the price is steep. Zeiis maybe?

Don't sell short the Nightforce SHV, beautiful optics

Is this the Howa mountain rifle? I would love to see some pics and first hand review when you get it. What caliber did you get?

I'm a big fan of lightweight rifles, and have used an NXS 5.5-22x50 on one. While the scope was built like a tank, and I loved the illumination and the glass, it wasn't really at home on the rifle. Currently I'm using a leupold VX-6 3-18x44, at 19 ounces, compared to say Zeiss 3-15 HD at about the same weight, you get:

-firedot illumination, with motion switch
-30mm tube
-CDS dial (or not, your choice) with zero stop, and zero lock
-better high end mag (18x)
-side focus parallax
-ability to use leupold alumina caps

I have heard a few guys that were not pleased with the VX6, but switching from the NXS shaved 10 ounces and I have never looked back. There are certainly lighter scopes if you only want a 3-9 or 4-12.

This is the Alberta Tactical Mountain Hunter in. 308. I like the Night Force but I blew the budget on the rifle. Momma might not get new shoes.....

So I settled on the Nightforce SHV in a 5.5x20x56. Reasonable compromise all the way around and mom still can buy used shoes.

Two pounds is definitely a bit much, particularly when most shots at mountain game are considerably less than 400 yards, and six power magnification is more than adequate.

Even at 600 yd, six power will make the target appear like 100 yd. If you can't hit at 100 with iron sights, you certainly won't be able to hit at 600 with a scope
