Optics for nomad - Vortex

Fellow CGNers,

I've been looking for a red dot sight to put on my nomad for a few weeks now. I really like the Vortex Strike fire, but I'd like to have your opinion about the low hunting mount. How does it align with the original sights? I'm pretty sure they won't cowitness, but are they that annoying while looking through the optics? I'd like to keep the iron sights on.

Also, if anyone has this setup on their nomad, I'd really like to see a pic of your rifle! That would help me a lot!

The vortex strikefire will not co-witness with the nomad sights even with the low mount. I just took my front sight off when i had it on there because I liked having a clear sight picture. But you could easily run it with the sight still attached no problem.

Pretty much every way but Ill outline the major points. Glass: the strikefire has poor resolution. Lots of distortion towards the outside. The dot is too bright on its lowest setting for low light shooting. In the evening the dot will flare and wash out the target/background seeming more like a really bright 8+ moa dot. The poor resolution makes it difficult to make out your target and background and contrast between the dot and target. Bottom line: poor optical quality. The control box on the side blocks much of your left eye's FOV and its easy to bump it and switch to NV mode or accidentally turn it on. Its alot bigger and heavier plus it uses very expensive batteries. In contrast, the TRS-25 is very small and lightweight, has way better glass, a slightly smaller dot with more reasonable brightness settings, the left side of the sight is clean with no obsructions and CR2032 batteries are dirt cheap. Plus its $130 vs $200 for the strikefire. Resolution is much better, the dot is cleaner, the controls are nicer and I feel its far and above the best value in an RDS. Vortex rode in on a big marketing hype and work ok for the average joe so people keep jumping on their bandwagon. In my experience they are expensive for their performance which is always beaten by less expensive competitors. They have lots of failures, even though their customer service is exceptional Id rather not have to cut a day at the range short and deal with getting a replacement product. Even their high end stuff has a high number of failures.

I disagree with Mr Supernova. I have the Strikefire with red and green dot on my SR22. I was able to take it out yesterday for the first time and sight it in, and of course play around a bit.... It WAY exceeded my expectations. The dot was NOT too bright and washed out nor was it appearing to be an 8 moa dot.... in fact at 125 yards the dot was so crisp and small enough to pick off pop cans.... repeatedly. Is it possible that the one you used was made on a monday?

I just think some people have different preferences on different things... You like your TRS, I like my strikefire, OP might like a Tasco.... who knows?
 
I have no other red dots to compare the strikefire to, but if its low light and it looks washed out or too bright....well thats what the brightness adjustments are for. As for distorted glass, mine is perfectly clear all the way around so i think maybe you got a dud.
 
I, for one, ended up buying a $39 Tasco RedDot from Can Tire. It does co-witness with the iron sights (just), and turned out to be an amazingly good optic. Appears to be CNC machined from aluminum alloy (not a plastic piece of crap), its brightness settings seem to work with all the conditions I've been able to find so far, and kept working even though I accidentally left it on for a few weeks in the safe. I've also removed it a couple of times, and it zeroed perfectly without adjustment when I put it back on my Nomad.

I'm just saying...
 
I was happy with the strikefire at first. Until I upgraded to the less expensive TRS-25. You guys are taking my comments too literally. The differences are not extreme but enough to make the TRS a clear winner. Dollar for dollar you get a better optic with the TRS. Try one before you defend your sf. As for the brightness I said that is with the brightness on the lowest setting. Don't get me wrong its not a s**t sight like an nc star but it is outperformed by some less expensive options.
 
Interesting posts. It pretty much illustrates what I've heard from Vortex. Really good product, but you can bump into a defective unit every once in a while. Easy fix with the warranty, but still sucks to have to go through this process. Thanks for all your input

TargetGuy, I saw in one of your SR22 youtube vids (awesome gun BTW) that the on/off switch on your Strikefire is actually located on the top of the control pannel and not on the side??? Is that a newer model or something? Really interesting since one of the big criticism was the location of that switch, I've never seen one like that on the net before.

Haha you noticed that eh? yes MY power button which also switches it from red to green IS located in top of the control box. The guy I bought it from (a local through the EE) said he bought it new a year ago, so I am under the assumption that is an older model! But the thing works amazingly well IMO! But a little tip i learned on youtube.... when your done with the sight, put it in night vision mode before turning it off, that way if it DOES accidentally get turned on (or left on) it will use very little battery for 6 hours then shut off automatically and BAM battery lasts forever :)

Haha! Well, did a bit of research, you're right! Turns out that in the first designs of the Strikefire, the button was indeed located on the top of the control box... I guess you're one of the lucky ones!

Good tip about the nigh vision, according to Vortex's website, the battery can run anywhere from 7000 to 8000 hours on the night vision mode. Not a big deal if left on in the safe for 6 hours!
 
After a bunch of research I had narrowed it down to a few:

Pans:
Mueller Optical 1x22x33 quick shot
Ultradot Pan A/V

Holo copy:
Sightmark Ultra Shot

Tube:
Bushnell Trophy T Dot

I'm sure they are all at least decent, and priced accordingly to quality. But in the end I got the EOtech 512. Go figure.

Where is it located now? My on/off is located at the top too
