Hi,

I have a Glock 17 Gen 5 I have just started shooting. I am enjoying shooting it, but I see myself picking up some sort of optic for it when I have some spare cash. I can't be more specific as I have only held one pistol that had an optic installed and I am new to pistols.

I would love to hear from you about recommendations for a new pistol shooter. I don't see spending more than $500, but I don't want a cheap POS either.

There is soooo much information on here. I could spend days searching, It just made more sense to ask.

Is your Glock a MOS version or just standard Glock 17? If just standard, you would need some gunsmith work on the slide to install a red dot.

You may want to ask around or go to local gun shop to try different ones especially if you want to do competition shooting.

For under $500, Holoson and Vortex have something fit your budget.

Vortex is good, reasonable prices and a super warrenty,
I have a 6 mm , dot is a bit large for bulls eye shooting. but fast to pick up.
3 mm is better for longe range, or bull eye.
BUT, learn to shoot good with open sights first.
I shoot as good with open sights as a red dot, but the red dot is fun, I don't shoot matches, that is where most are used.

I plan to do a lot of open sight shooting first, That's how my dad taught me to shoot a rifle, once you can shoot open you can shoot with a scope, but not the other way around.
I am just curious. Still not sure if next extra cash goes to optics or another gun. I appreciate the advice, I will keep my eyes out and learn a bit about Vortex and Holosun. Just a little looking tonight has me convinced I will break my $500 budget when the time comes.

I’m a big fan of optics on pistols, especially in the competition/ run and gun world. Obviously everyone should be proficient with open sights, that is an absolute, but I really don’t know a single person who has switched to an optic that would go back to sights given the choice. Once you have used them and gotten past the learning curve they are just stupidly easy to use fast:)
I personally run a Vortex Venom 6 moa on a G19 with a milled slide and love it, I have a bunch of buddies who use the Venom or the Holosun 407/507 sights and both are excellent and can be on your pistol for less than or around $500, both have excellent warranties.
I also have a few buddies who are running RMR’s but they will definitely blow your $500 budget. Spend some extra money and get a quality mounting plate, the Glock supplied plates that come with the MOS are not great.
I don’t doubt you will enjoy optics once you go down that path :)
