Buying my First AR, Stag Arms 2TL, like to try a red dot with magnifier, going be shooting close range to 100yds mostly,i have been looking at the Burris XTS-135...thoughts?? Any input on what type of magnifier? Looking for something for a half decent price but worth the money, any input on what i should look at would be great. Thanks

For budget optics, here are my suggestions best to worst, also happen to be listed in order of price.

I'm not familiar with the higher end optics since I'm still a noob.

Lucid HD7 (~280) (used once, love it)
Vortex Sparc (~210)
Vortex StrikeFire (~180) (own this one)

Those 1-4 scopes are nice. You can find good reviews on them. Vortex, hi-lux, leupold, trijicon, falcon (1-5) and sightron has a new 1-7 that seems nice too. Maybe not as fast as a RDS but your groups should be smaller.

How much are you willing to spend?

I have a Trijicon TA01 (4x) on mine but I shoot from 7m all the way out to 600m. I shoot with both eyes open. It isn't cheap but you get quality. I think I paid $1200 for mine 6 years ago.

If I wanted something purely for less than 100m I would look at an Aimpoint Micro or if I wanted to spend a little less and not concerned about the added weight an Aimpoint Pro.

Yea I really like the simple reticle on my Leupold Mk AR 1.5-4x 20mm.

I went with Trijicon TR24G 1-4x. Love it. Great glass very happy. Pricey but I wanted something very reliable, proven, and that would be there when I needed it.

Purpose for the rifle?

If you're into 3 gun, carefully consider what division you'll be in. A 3x magnifier usually puts you in optics but without the ability to zoom up or down.

Also consider whether or not magnification is required at all, 100y is not really that hard without it.

Definitely no need for a magnifier for 100m or less, just adding useless weight especially if you get in to the close-in/cqb stuff.

With an EOTech or Aimpoint Micro you will get the quickest target acquisition and they are nice and light.

I have run lots of different rd's & scopes over the years. I'd axtually list these in the opposite order.

Lucid is incredibly bulky and well... overpriced for what you get. YMMV.
