Optics mounts, what's the black ju-ju involved to get the correct one?

One of the budget tricks is to use monetary coins, stacked up and placed between the rail and the bottom turret of the scope, to test different heights.
Modeling clay works well too. Roll a couple of 1/2" - 3/4" round stems and set them on top of the base then set the scope down and keep pushing down into the clay oil the desired height is reached. Remove the scope and measure what the thickness of the clay is and start looking for the proper height rings. Plasticine works just as good if you don't have clay.
