On the underside of some pistols there are groves for a slide in front of the trigger guard

Is this a flashlight mount , is the red dot terminology for a sight IE: is this an actual aim point light , the bullet strikes were the red dot is on the target

I have been reading and googling but not really understanding this

I dont exactly understand your wording. But you can put a light or a laser on the rail. Or an integral combination of both.

Laser will obviously project onto the target.

A red dot site will project a red dot on the glass of the optic, but not on the target.

Hopefully that makes sense.

Best to try some IPSC guns if you know some shooters there. They have the experience of the good and bad with with Red Dot optics.
I'm waiting on a Shadow 2 Optic Ready gun myself, but don't know if the range will be open this summer. I use a Vortex Razor on my other gun.
The bottom notch or notches in front of the trigger guard are more for lights/lazers, but I know of nobody using it on range guns.
Check out youtube. You'll find lots of vids on different types.

A laser is excellent for low light shooting. It allows you to keep your head up, looking with both eyes at the target. Imagine a night situation, your dog fighting in the back yard with a big raccoon. You have be very sure where your shot will hit. A laser is fast and accurate,

The laser is less effective (or non-effective) outdoors on a sunny day, unless shooting very close.

The red dot projects a red dot onto the glass. You aim to put the red dot on target. It replaces iron sights and (for me) cuts the groups in half. It takes extra practice to be able to find the dot and then get it on target. For anyone over the age of 40, a red dot advantage is that the sight is focused at infinity- same as the target. So regular glasses are perfect.

With iron sights, you have to be able to focus on the front sight. Something us geezers can't do unless we use special shooting glasses set to focus at 28"
