I have a Savage 93R17 on order currently and I would like to know what you all consider to be the best all around optics for this calibre/rifle.

My 30-06 came with a basic package series Bushnell 3-9x40 and I had earmarked it for a less powerful calibre like the 17. Will these two make a nice pair? Or would you recommend another scope?

with smaller calibres you tend to shoot smaller targets. i find more magnification is nice. on my .22wmr i can pick off spent 12gauge shells at 150-200yrds. thats with a 7-21-44AO 3200. it all depends what you plan on shooting.

The minimum power I like to use on an HMR is 12x, but I think 14x is a little better. The caliber has some reach. I use 3-9x on my .22s, but on smaller game/smaller targets most people shoot their HMRs at, a little more power is nice.

I just re-scoped my .22WMR, and put a new Mueller APT on it~I think they're a really nice scope for the $. This is it;

Really like the reticle, the glass is really clear and good in low light, and it's good value. You don't read much about them on CGN, but on the US forums, they're a real favorite. I paid more than $100 more for my Bushnell 3200 4-12x40 and honestly, the Mueller is a much nicer scope.

That 17 of your will deserve good glass and you will appreciate it.

I went with a Sightron from Jerry at Mystic Precision.I purchased a 6-20x with mil-dot and it RARELY comes off the 20x magnification.The dots are also nice for hold off for wind and hold over for long range for quick shooting.

It is very capable of gophers at 200 yards and that is a lot smaller target at 20x than a deer at 9x.

The chambering has good range and great accuracy.Compliment it with the right optics.

Depends what you are shooting and at what distances.

Out here on the prairies where the 17 HMR is a great mid range (75-150 yard) gopher gun I found that the typical 3-9x was a little under powered. Found a nice 4.5-14x on the EE and it served we well. At least until I was stupid and sold the combo.

At the farther ranges the small gophers really necessitate the higher magnification. However, depending on your type of shooting, you may find the regular 3-9x to suit you fine.
