Is it viable to put a rail on an O/U for optics ?? I've seen the Browning cynergy ultimate turkey gun and was wondering if its feasible to drill and tap a TriStar Hunter mag camo as a dedicated turkey gun ??

cheers

My two cent...take it for what it's worth....I think you need to find the turkey gun you like and build it to your specifications. Some people may criticize but your the one that has to live with it. I've always thought an over under would make an ideal turkey gun. Turkey choke for a bird that hangs up and an open choke for one that sneaks in. I've only used a second shot a couple times so the follow up advantage of a pump or semi may not be important.
Keep in mind I know nothing about the cynergy so take my comments with a grain of salt

To each their own, but I wouldnt be to inclined to drill and tap a Cynergy for optics to hunt turkey. I personally dont see a need for optics to hunt turkey at all, but I guess I could see why one would use optics to hunt big game. If an Over/Under is your gun of choice and optics are important, then do as you see fit and dont worry about what others may think. But if you ever decide to sell the gun in the future, you'll hurt the resale value buy drilling and tapping

Not needed.

It comes with a short rail installed as a standard feature - along with the fiber sights.

  • FEATURES – Vector Pro lengthened forcing cones; Extended Ultimate Full Turkey and Spreader choke tubes solving the problem of targets that can be short or long range; Three flush Invector-Plus choke tubes (F,M,IC); Brass front bead for durability; Inflex recoil pad with one ¼” spacer
  • Marbles Arms Bullseye rear sight with Fiber-optic front sight; Short 1913 rail suitable for small red-dot optic

edit:

Sorry, misread your question - you are asking about tapping a Tristar so you could rig up the same as the Browning. I say yes, go for it. We sell Tristar O/U's, they are not an expensive shotgun so you aren't going to wreck it's value.

A second option, since all the ones I have seen have a vented rib, you could go with a vented rib cantilever (Sun Optics makes/sells these for sure because I have one on a 20 gauge pump) - sell for about 50 bucks - fastens right onto the rib and gives you a cantilever similar to what you get on a slug barrel - works fine.

Thanks gents . And yes I am getting the Tristar and am considering making it the poor mans cynergy ultimate turkey gun . the 3 plus K for the cynergy is out of my snack bracket .

cheers

edited to add . Great bird there !!

A scope on an ou sure but a tristar ou. Good luck. I hope you enjoy tinkering and arguing with the warranty dealer

I've used a scope on my pump a few times. I like it to help see the beard in wooded areas

I'll give it a whirl . I'll either get it drilled and tapped (researching smiths in Southern Ontario) or go the vented rib cantilever route as galamb mentioned . The red dot should be pretty light either way .

cheers
