Optics on precision AR’s- Help!! What & How??

To get the eye relief I wanted on my "precision" AR I used a Larue mount. It pushed the scope far enough forward to solve the problem.

I noticed you put the red dot on the left side of the scope. I think I like that better,...most times if we shoot around barricades,...I would rather cant the rifle mag pointing in...but other mounts are on the right side of the rifle (ie JP/Burkett mount)..
Do you have to cant the rifle a little out to use the red dot, or can you see an unobstructed FOV.

I wanted it on the left because I'm a right handed shooter, so for speed, if I need to go to the red-dot, then my head is already on that side of the gun.
When I use the Docter, I just break my cheek weld. It is a very fast transition, and great for fast hits on the closer targets (I've only used it to 100m).
Here are a few pics closer up that show the sight's proximity to each other that might help as well:

(excuse the blurriness, it just did not want to focus at this distance:redface:)

Hey all!!

I think I finally have some success with regards to proper eye relief and wanted to share. Please understand these are preliminary pictures and there is still a lot of work to be done. For example, I have a different bi-pod coming, there are some issues with target grip attachment, I want to change the layout of the rail covers, and both the scope and free float tube require final adjustment.

As previously stated I had purchased a Arms #35 dual throw lever rail mount with 30 mm rings. and 0.25 spacer to give a final height of 0.95 which is just about prefect for me. I simply took the mount, and configured the rings to give me the most forward position they could.

I then freed up a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14x50mm LR Tactical with Side focus and Mil-Dot. To me I this scope has the optimal features to get the most out of my build. I then reattached my A2 style stock, and started working with the components. I short time later I had the exact eye relief I needed, in the base configuration I wanted.

This just goes to confirm that optics mounted on AR’s should be more compact, have shorter eye relief, and use mounts that are flexible and have the ability to “cantilever over” the receiver end.

I thought I might share some pictures, and would welcome any comments and thoughts you might have.

Regards and all the best

AbH

Looks good, glad you found a solution that works for you.

Ronin, no scope has adjustable eye relief.

Does anyone have any experience with the Armalite mount? Looking for a cheap alternative to the Larue, but they don't appear to give you that much extra room to play with.

Apparently LaRue is the heat - even airsofters are making knock-offs of it!!!:runaway:

The idiot even put his Tango Down knock-off backwards.....:slap:

While I have no direct experience with the Armalite mount, I have been chatting with Hungry at length about it. They do list them on their website, however if memory serves they offer it only in a 1" ring, and I wanted to use 30mm tube. Hungry's comments regarding them are as follows

...........Other solution...... is to find the Armalite mount (about 1" high) and 4" forward of the carrying handle on the flat top. You can often find them on the EE Forums. Armalite has them listed on their website.

I ran into the same problem with my Leupold but from the beginning I knew what I wanted to do. To make a "precision" AR do not forget to: get a precision trigger and a bubble level. My setup is fairly "Plain Jane" but in essence I wanted to build a "sleeper" AR. The idea was just to freefloat the barrel (RRA part), precision trigger (Jewell (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)) and a bipod. Wanted to keep it looking as much as a C-7A1 as possible (with C-79 attached). Had the opportunity to purchase a nice Leupold scope and then all I did was purchase the A.R.M.s rail mount, Warne rings and a bubble level. The Magpul triggerguard I bout on a whim and struggle to decide to put it on but once it was on it really completed the package.

Does anyone know what the dovetails on the mounting nuts on the rail is for?? The only thing else I have plans for this is to add a doctor sight and a Surfire handguard light setup. The only issue is I have wandered off of what I wanted to do and that was to make a "sleeper" AR. Shoots real well though...

The really nice feature of this setup of eye relief is that the cocking handle is not obstructed.

I have a burris fastfire mounted on top of a burris shortmag 3-9 on a scope accessory rail. I have it mounted vertically and inline with the scope (as opposed to canted or mounted to the side of the scope). I like it better that way, but there are a couple of drawbacks. First, a different cheek weld is required because the red dot is on top of the scope, but there is no real waty to get around that one. Second, it wouldn't work on a scope with large turrents, and third, because its on a short scope it only fits in one spot and there is no way to adjust eye relief of the red dot (scope rings are in the way). I haven't been able to get a proper zero with the red dot yet, but i haven't had much time to play with it either...a seperate red dot on a quick release mount would work better, but then you would obviously lose the versatility, and its the versatility I like. Cheers

Another vote for LaRue mount - just finding one can be problematic. :(

Leupold Mark 4 - 3-9X36 I think a Nightforce would work even better.

Also Geissele Match Trigger - the best AR trigger I ever had. Worth every penny.

No bull barrel here - WOA SPR profile stainless bbl.

a picture would be interesting. I am waiting to hear back from Wolverine about the Burris XTR tactical with Burris fastfire mounted no the front ring.

Well Gents, when I built my Precisiont AR carbine (read Hbar Dissipator with a Rifle length gas tube) I bought the American defence Recon Mount and I am very happy. The optics were already in my stable, and are a Leupy VarV-III 4.5-14*50mm mil-dot, 30mm tube, 4" sunshade, and Raised turrets.

Coulple pics (ok Im post horing a bit to show off some bling) of the results:

Barrel looked like this:

This is my set up.

I changed the scope recently - I haven't gotten around to taking a newer picture. Bushmaster Varminter with Leupold 3-10x40mm LR/T I like the rig it balances nicely and shoots well.
