Hi I am looking at a Vortex 6.5-20x50 PA as well as a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24 and was wondering about the Parallax Adjustment . The Vortex says it will go 50yds to infinity but I cant seem to find the info for the 4200. My question is if I wanted to shoot a target at less than 50yds would I not be able to focus on it ? Or is the focus a different thing all together? The reason I ask is that this would be going on a rimfire MarkII TR for awhile which I plan on shooting 50yd, 50meter and 100yd and 100meter matches but you never know if I might want to shoot say a 25yd target.

Thanks

I am not an expert, but I don't think that parallax and focus are exactly the same thing. I checked the specs on the respective websites and the Vortex claims 50 yards to infinity and the Bushnell claims 25 yards to infinity. However, on my Vortex 6.5-20X50PA with BDC reticle, the PA wheel will go a little bit beyond 50, but I don't know if it will make it to your 25 yards.

I used to shoot Bushnell for years, and thay are decent glass. However I had a couple that were a bit shoddy right out of the box (which could happen to anyone) and I had a couple of warranty problems too, the biggest problem being the length of time to get service. I know shoot Vortex exclusively, and haven't had a bad one yet, and the two times I had minor problems they fixed me up real fast.

According to the specs, these two scopes are comparable. I have not looked through that exact Bushnell scope, but like I said I do own the Vortex you asked about. It has very clear and bright glass, accurate tracking on the reticle and returns to the zero setting after dial ups. I could not tell from the Bushnell web site, but the Vortex is made on a 30 mm tube, it also has resettable zero on the adjustment turrets, and an Unconditional No Fault Lifetime Warranty. Plus it is a few hundred bucks less.

Paralax is more to do with how the Crosshairs sit on target. With adjustable objectives, if you set it to 100 yards then line up on target you can move you eye slightly and the crosshairs won't move on the target. Those its hard to group well.I had one banner that my wife grouped 3 inches lower than I did because of where we set our eyes to the scope.
As you are asking about close targets I really don't think it will make a difference at that short range.

The closer you get to the target the more parallax becomes an issue.

I just happen to have a friend's Viper 6.5-20X50 on hand at the moment and it indeed does not focus well closer than 50 yd. I find that a little strange since my cheepo 6-24X50 Vortex Crossfire can focus at an object across the living room, but then it isn't a side focus setup either.
I prefer Vortex over Bushnell, but if match accuracy at 25yds is really critical the Viper may not work for you.
