I am looking at a Savage Model 12LRPV for target shooting only NO HUNTING. Anyways I was wondering what you all recommended for scope/base and rings? I am looking for something that is good quality and will last but not necessarily destroy the bank. Im going to be starting at around 300 yds then going to try to push out to a 1000yds eventually.

So what do you suggest?

Thanks

How much is right..I'd say any Burris Tactical or Leupold Mark 4 series would be a good starter..if less $$ I'd suggest Falcon Menace or Bushnell Elite.

Ken Farrel 1 pce bases are good. You can get them in standard or 20 moa. If on a budget, you could couple them with Burris rings with the plastic inserts.

whats the pricing on the Burris tactical and the Mark 4 Series? As for mounts do I need standard mounts or would I need a different MOA mount? Also what power should I be looking at? Any good online places with pricing I can look at? What about the Burris Fullfield II Tactical ? Would you recomend the 4.5x-14x-42mm or the 6.5x-20x-50mm?

Thanks

For the money spent, Bushnell Elite 4200 and Nikon Monarch offer the best glass and superb mechanical.

A great starter scope is the Elite 4200 6x24 AO with mil dot reticle. I compete with this as it provides both excellent optics and mechanicals. 1/8 min clicks are a great thing in a target scope. The mildot reticle will help you get a long ways out.

With a Farrell base and burris rings, no issue to past 1000yds with a 6mm or larger. Workable for a 223/308.

If on a lower budget then say $450 used, ELite 3200 and Nikon Buckmaster (I prefer the nikon).

I just had a look through a new gen Sightron SII Big Sky and was very impressed with the optics. It is right up there with the Elite 4200/Nikon Monarchs. Well priced too.

What do you guys think of a weaver T36 ? Would it be too much magnification at 300Yds?

Thanks

That depends. Many F class shooters go as high as 45X. Personally, mirage gets too thick in the summer so I prefer to top at around 24X but there are times when more is better.

Big reason shooters are going to high mag variables.

The Weavers have decent optics and are very popular in SR BR. Sightron is another very popular high mag fixed scope.

There really is no wrong answer. If you like what it does for you, it's the right choice.

wow! Never thought that Bushnell 4200 be recommended by so many guys for 1000 yard target shooting. Always looked down at 4200 as a cheap, made in China optic. Obviously, I was wrong.

Did you ever answer the question about how much you wanted to spend? If you have crazy deep pockets I'd say to get a Nightforce 12-42x but your budget may not tolerate that too well.

Made in Japan, and VERY nice optics for the price.
