Don't know if this is the right forum to ask but ...

What would the optimum barrel length be for a 458 win mag?

I've seen them anywhere from 19" to 25". Obviously it's not a high velocity long range round, so a slightly shorter barrel is not a major issue, but why give up too much. Likewise, why carry and swing around any more length than necessary.

Thanks for any suggestions and feedback,
JB

I would think longer. I have .458 ruger, 458 browning , 375h&h brownings, 338 winch mag winch all with factory length barrels. If you go to short, the flash and blast would be a little much to take on the eyes and ears.

Muzzle blast and noise asside, my question pertains to the best balance performance wise.

ie: in a .22 LR it is considered that 16" is the optimum barrel length, and anything beyond that is not helping, and might even slow it down and hurt performance.

In regards to balance (which should be your number one priority) you'll have to know the weights of the rest of the componants (action, bbl countour, is it scoped etc)

I want things handy & quick pointing, no matter if its for fast target acquisition, thick brush or whatever, therefore all my big bores have shorter bbl's
My 416 Rem Mag has 24" bbl
My 375 H+H has 20.5" bbl
My 458 Lott has 21.5" bbl

We're typically not buying/shooting these for LR applications, why do you need/want a longer bbl?

In regards to muzzle blast from 20"-26" its a little more noticeable but easily manageable.

The above mentioned guns were built with strict orders to be balanced near perfect as possible, so the GS assembles gun & adjusts bbl. length accordingly......those are the lengths where they balanced right.
