My dad has been looking for a semi .243 or .223 full barrel rifle for way too long. I know of a few options out there in carbine configuration but he's long since said he wants a full length rifle.

I am aware of the Browning BLR/BAR as well as the Benelli R1 series already.

Are there any other options out there that cost less than the above mentioned?

750 Remington in either wood or synthetic - at least available in 243 because I have one on the rack at work.

He doesn't have many options in a hunting style long barrel in Canada Unfortunately. BAR, Rem750, R1, Ruger 14, that's about it. Unless you move to black guns/military. It sucks but kinda the way it is. Next best options would be lever gun or pump gun. Honestly they will likely be more accurate than the semi autos listed above.

nothing wrong with the non traditional rifles being used for hunting or as you call them "black/military" many are very accurate

The BAR/FNAR you mentioned is actually a very accurate semi auto, at least as good if not better than a pump or lever. Not every semi auto has the accuracy of an SKS

Never said there is anything wrong with military/black guns for hunting. Just if the op's father isn't interested in the hunting style guns mentioned above, he would have to go military to find a caliber and long barrel in semi auto.

I agree the BAR would be the most accurate of the ones I mentioned. Some BARs I have seen have been as accurate as some bolt guns but many more have not been. The rem 7600 has a very good reputation for accuracy as does the BLR.

I have no issue with black guns for hunting if it's legal then go for it. They are not for me ...I find them too heavy and too expensive but that JMO.

Cheers

Unfortunately in Canada, non restricted and semi auto = pricey. You will find both the Remington 742 series and the Winchester 100 for sale, used for about the $5-600 range (maybe less if you find a good deal). Reviews as far as accuracy and dependability are mixed. Seems to depend on whether the gun was made on a Friday or a Monday. The BAR's tend to get up into the $800 range. Generally they are accurate and dependable-about what you'd expect from Browning. Benelli makes the R1 series at about 2K, and Tradex carries the Verney-Carron in the same price range. As has been stated, unless you go into the military/black rifle style, the choices are limited, and even these are pretty pricey and you generally sacrifice weight (they tend to be heavier). The other choice is, of course, having one built off an existing action, or a semi-custom like the ATRS Modern Hunter. Either of these choices can run you up into the 4-5K range. You may be looking for a Unicorn in Canada
