So as the long title suggests I am looking at my options for a varmint gun in 22-250 rem that has a detatchable box magazine is fairly inexpensive ( no tikka ) and idealy has a 1-10 or there abouts twist rate. I have been looking at the axis and the ruger american as well the rem 783 as these all seem to be in the approximate ball park of what i want to spend ( about 500 bucks ). Now having read that i know that there are more expensive options such as possibly the sps dm , x-bolt, tikka, and savage 11 . what are the general thoughts out there on these guns that ive listed for an affordable gun that may get a tad beat around.

the axis in 22-250 is a 1-12 twist , the same as the stevens 200 i used to own but sold lol. The stevens was inapropriatley accurate lol but the blind magazine was such a pain in the satchel i had to get rid of it as it was far to expensinve in my mind to convert to a detatchable mag.

Howa, they have a few models for it I believe and aftermarket lower bottom "metal" with 10 or 15 round mags I think

5 & 10, and you can buy the rifles with the dbm already installed in some models now.

I had an axis which was fine for the price and not hard to sell if you get bored of it.
I'd try to get one of the ruger americans with the redfield scopes if I was looking for a inexpensive rifle again.

i would suggest keeping an eye on the equipment exchange there is a few good 22-250's that show up on there from time to time. its a bit above your price range but i think the browning xbolts have a1/10 twist.

I'd for sure stay away from the cheap Remington and the Axel.
A banged up old Ruger for less than $500 would be a decent deal.
Check on line for sales of the S1 and S2's.
WSS had a run of discounts and the prices had me licking me chops.

I agree with tokguy on the 788's if you can find a decent one.
The Ruger 'Merican wouldn't be oaribble to own either.

Hmm some really good suggestions there folks . Iam thinking I may hunt around tomorrow a bit here in the edmonton area and see what is currently available

Well that's the kicker here I've already got dies and loaded ammo and 100 plus brass kicking around. So if I went 223 I'd have a bunch of stuff to sell and buy

The Axis is great for the guy who doesn't shoot much - like goes out for deer one week a year.

If you are going to "shoot" your rifle, in fairly short order you are going to want to change the trigger. And if that's the case you may as well spend the extra money "up front" and get a better all round built rifle.

The Ruger Americans with the Redfield scope are a nice set-up but are couple hundred over your stated budget, but given the scope and the rings, you would spend 300 extra bucks to put that glass on your rifle. The one "dislike" I have with the American's is the stock itself. It's not "bad", just has a bunch of sharp edges (right out of the box), particularly along the barrel channel - and I mean sharp enough to cut you - can easily be knocked down but you shouldn't have to "right out of the box".

You can get a scoped/blued axis for what you suggest is your budget, but the glass on them is pretty low end - again, if you plan on shooting a lot you would be replacing it in short order.

If you really want to keep it inexpensive you might also want to look at the Mossberg Patriot. I consider it an Axis with a decent trigger - at the same price point.

I have a stainless axis in 22 250 that I use for coyotes and for the price that rifle just plain shoots ,light to carry and once I got the trigger tuned it is okay ,I got no complaints with it Dutch

Well I picked up a savage 11 trophy hunter xp with the weaver kaspa scope 3x9x40 with bdc reticle for a whopping 499.93.
Overall I think that's fairly decent since that's only 25 bucks before taxes more than the axis is. Haven't shot in 6et but I spent an hour or so resizing 100 brass I had kicking around and found out I've got almost 60 rounds of loded ammo as well . Should be ok for a while I think.

I was gonna recommend the trophy hunter. Well worth the extra $ over the axis as you get a better scope and the accutrigger. Its a 1 in 12" twist right?
