Options for astigmatism

What options exist for people with astigmatism. I didn’t know I had astigmatism until I bought my first red dot the other day on impulse. The dot turns into 4 closely spaced dots when I look through. It becomes far less blurry with my glasses on but still blurry. When I look through my rear BUIS it is crystal clear and sharp so I am fairly sure this is astigmatism.

I would prefer a 1x prism sight like a spitfire 1x but can only get one if I sell this red dot. Is it possible to get astigmatism correcting contact that will fully focus the red dot

Think I’m going to work with my red dot. I glasses the dot flares to twice it’s size. Glasses on it is 2 MOA but a little fuzzy on the edges and glasses with aperture it is perfect 2 MOA. I think if I get astigmatism corrective contacts only for shooting I’ll be good to go.

I gave in and got glasses. Astigmatism in right eye. I brought a red dot with me to the optometrist so I could get the desired effect I wanted

Might as well just get a pair of corrected (safety) glasses Matt,
Unless you don't bother with safety glasses while shooting.
That way you're not looking through two sets (Safety glasses & Contacts).

I have had astigmatism all my life and with prescription glasses have never experienced a problem with any type of sight.

A few years ago I developed Epiretinal Membrane, first in my right eye, a year later in my left eye. No 'cure' for that really... it's the schitts. A scope cross hair appears as crooked lines... I first thought the scope was buggered until every scope I looked through was the same.

I got a astigmatism. I just turn the dot on a lower setting and seems to not effect me as much. Also I try and use smaller dots. 3 MOA doesn't effect me that well. Brighter I put it, the more starburst it gets.

I looked at a 1x spitfire but if i can’t sell my red dot I can’t buy the spitfire. With glasses on the dot is almost fully focused without it’s a starburst. I am going to look into a pair of prescription shooting glasses or contacts. I must have mild astigmatism as my glasses make it almost unnoticeable.

Problem I have is at low power setting my eyes refocus the dot enough that it is hard to see, with my glasses on at low power setting the dot is nice and crisp.

Not the end of the world as I have needed something for shooting for a while. I find it hard to see what I hit when using my iron sighted milsurps at 50 yards even

First time I got a red dot I got a nebula looking through it . Found out later I have an astigmatism . I also noticed if I keep my red dot on the lowest or second lowest setting I can see it remains pretty crisp

I've started to develop some astigmatism in my right (dominant/shooting) eye. It seems to affect only my use of red dots, to the extent that I have sold almost all of them.

I'm experimenting with a red dot mounted on an angled base on the left side of the rifle. With the head situated to place my right eye behind the scope in the correct position, my left eye is looking through the red dot sight and superimposing the dot on the target. It actually works pretty well, but does take some time and practice to become accustomed to it. Looks pretty goofy, though...

I started like that as well, but within 2 years it has become worse and worse. Now everything is fuzzy after a few feet in my dominant eye.

I got astigmatism and bought a spitfire 1x. Sold it right away it was a real pos. Reticle was cristal clear but i saw two target downrange when aiming with both eye open. Focusing i could make the second disapear but in a quick aquisition situation i l had a real hard time getting the right of the two target. Go to your LGS and try one if you can. These are not for everyone in my experience

Wow...that's not what i wanted to read first thing in the morning!

How did you address this? And is your solution working? I was ecstatic when I got my eyes lasered over 20 years ago; fantastic results, and no glasses needed for the first time in my life. I'd hate to go back to wearing them, but you do what you need to do...

Are there other good illuminated reticle options? Some of the 1-4x scopes caught my eye like the v-brite but not sure how they are at quick acquisition at 1x or if they can be used with both eyes open

Laser vision correction! Do it if they can correct you its worth every penny

Agreed; it's quite literally the best money I have ever spent on anything in my life. Back when I had it done they could not correct astigmatism; now apparently they can?

I will also mention that red dot or holographic sights look more and more "blobby" to my eye. However, I have a couple of illuminated-center reticles which are still tack sharp for me. The reticles on my Leupold VX-R scopes, as well as my illuminated Nightforce SHV, fall into this category, i.e. still perfectly useable.

^^^This. Try lower settings. Also try different distances - at least on carbines. Some dots I find look clearer for me when they are mounted closer and others when they are mounted a little more forward.

For pistols, I have progressive lenses and I find that by adjusting my head position slightly, I can find the sweet spot.
