Hi Guys
I have a complete receiver with all the parts for a Winchester 1886 and would like to know where I can get a barrel preferabley in 45-70.Do they make aftermarket barrels for these guns or not.It is first year production and complete so I would really like to get it shooting and hunt with it.I know it wont have the value as I'm not going to worry about getting a factory letter to see what cal it was originally in,this is just going to be a hunting gun.If I can't get a 45-70 barrel than what cal barrel can I get that I can still make the brass from.I know most 86 cals were based on the 45-70 so I would be using that brass to make whatever.
Any help is great.

You could try bits of pieces, they carry montana rifle barrels, Rick at alberta tactical rifle orders in stuff from brownells, I just ordered a green mountain barrel for my rolling block, 35 inch octogan in 45 cal.Check out Brownells online, they carry a ton of barrels. As soon as you get to 30 inches or over it seems barrels are harder to find and the price ges up fast.

A little OT but, there is a serial number break in the 1886 recievers. Those before the serial break are black powder only. (or confined to BP pressures).
I can't remember what the break is, but you might want to check it out.

Like already said above, Green Mountain make some pretty popular barrels, as does Badger. .45-70 is a good way to start, calibre-wise as well as cost & access-to-component wise, though .40-65 is becoming popular and accessable/cheap enough that it's almost not worth the time to re-form it from .45-70 anymore.
I don't know of anyone making a pre-threaded barrel for an original Winchester 1886, if that may have been what you were looking for? Also, I understand that modern Browning and (USRA) Winchesters made in Japan have different threads, though I haven't personally compared them.
Are you set on a .45-70 based cartridge? I have a Browning 1886 carbine in .45-70 and am very happy with it. Got my first moose with it. The only thing is that after years of using it I recently got a look at some of the larger .50cal options (.50-90 & up)...and really liked the looks of them....

My receiver is first year production and was made for BP.So if I put a new barrel on it I can I shoot smokeless or not.I don't want to reload unless I have to but would like factory loads if possible.I will most likely make this gun a carbine so it's easier for me as a dogger when deer hunting.
Thanks, 88
