Hello shooters
Its time to start planning the 2017 ORA CQB season. Dates at this time are tentative. If you registered for my mailing list you would have had this info a week ago. Register here

Many thanks to Tim K for all of his work with CQB over the years, and I would like to especially thank him for his mentorship. I have been installed as the new match director for CQB by the ORA council. There will be some changes to CQB this year as I can't replace Tim, and have other commitments. Those combat boots are just too big. I am looking for some help with some things to keep CQB alive and well. I will try to be at every match but I will likely miss a few for work and I would still like shoot a few matches. We should have enough RSO qualified people to spread it out so everyone only needs to help at one or two matches.

Things I need help with, looking at the RSO qualified members in particular
  • RSO to blow the whistle and keep time for each match
  • Two AROs to help at each match
  • Stats officers/scoresheet runners
  • Someone to monitor registration in the morning
  • Someone to bring match supplies when I can't make it

Administrative changes
  • Registration for all matches will be in Practiscore instead of via email
  • Payment will be by EMT, no cash at the range
  • No refunds for cancellations the week before the match
  • We are likely going to have a later start time unless someone can go for march in on Friday. Timings to follow.
  • Everyone set-ups, everyone cleans up. No leaving early, no ignoring the brass sweep, etc. Malingerers will be asked to leave and not return.

Rules changes/reminders
  • Pistols are iron sights only - no red dots, lasers, scopes, etc
  • The load out is the load out - cheaters will be asked to leave and not return
  • No coupled/attached magazines

Guests
As far as I know guests/non members are only able to participate in a single ORA event before they must become members. This will be enforced without exception
I still pan to email out reminders before each match.

Match Fee
I am planning a $20 match fee

2017 Schedule
These are the dates I requested and are subject to approval/change by DND.
I am planing that Match 6 will be the championship BBQ. There may be additional costs for the BBQ.

Then why are we allowed scopes on our rifles? We're not restricted to irons there. Even the NSCC Service Rifle Rulebook (2016) states that reflex sights are allowed (para 7.04 2b) as long as the pistol fits properly, with retention, in its holster. Just saying....
 
Pistols with optics were never "allowed" they just were explicitly forbidden before 2016.
Service conditions - when CAF/RCMP/etc, start issuing pistols with optics I'll change the rules to match. I'm looking at building Roland Special and I'd love to use it for CQB, but its not in the spirit of the sport.
For now its as much about maintaining a level playing field as it is about the spirit of the sport. If we want to turn CQB into an equipment race, I'm open to that conversation. If you want to bring an unusual toy, no problem, but you won't be shooting for points.

My last cqb match that I shot was in 2015 and I used a Glock with a reflex sight without any problems from the RO's . If I remember reading right, there was others that used them last year also.
 
Tim K made no pistol optics a rule in 2016. His logic was sound and the rule continues to be in force in 2017. There was a case where a pistol mounted optic was used last year despite instructions that pistols are to be iron sights only.
I am making an effort to make the rules as simple and as clear as possible for the 2017 season, then no one can claim "surprises". I don't want to have to write a giant rule book for CQB, kills the fun of it from my perspective. If people start doing unusual things to their rifles to get vastly improved scores maybe I'll have to.
For now; irons, unmagnified optics, fixed power, and variable power optics are all still permissible for rifles. As are lasers, but not to many people see keen on those.
NSCC rules book doesn't apply to CQB, CQB isn't a part of NSCC. Their rules are for their matches, our rules are for our matches. I've said before and will continue to say that CQB type shooting should be included at NSCC, and that CQB matches from across the provinces should have an opportunity for a national level event. Someday maybe I'll get that.
 
Those registed for CQBm1 April 8 have been emailed.
Note updated start time this year is 8am.
Match fee of $20 is due. No cash will be accepted at the range. No refunds for cancellations with in one week of the match.
