What a great day for CQB, we had some first timers out along with our CQB counterpart from Quebec.

All of you are a great group, you step up and help mentor our new shooters, give others pointers and keep the CQ sport going.

With Tim’s whistle that always keeps us on track and on time (many thanks!) and Dave K’s commitment to CQB.

A very special thank you to Howard, Charlie, Ian, Kyle and the others that helped in the setup and teardown of the range. A special thanks to Sandy for waking up early and coming out to run stats for us.

Just a reminder make sure to review CQB dates.

Once again, we were blessed with Tim-phoo good weather. It has been raining all week, but today was dry and almost sunny by match time.

I had a relaxing shoot. the battery died on my camera during he first relay.... Sorry guys. I know some of you wanted to show off your new Gucci kit.

Nice pictures, I like how almost everyone has a bunch of dirt on their strong side shoulder. i wonder how that got there?

Thanks to everybody who gave up their time to let us have some safe fun. See y'all at the next match.

I usually use a different rifle for each shoot. Each tends to have its own strengths an weaknesses. The all-round best is the AR-15 because it re-loads so fast.

Today I shot a Chinese SKS I bought 25 years ago for $99. Strength is absolute reliability. Weakness is the stripper clips are not as fast to re-load as the mag change in a AR-15, so I had to shoot faster.

I tried to motivate everyone to shoot better by announcing that anyone who could not beat an old fart with a SKS should take up quilting.

The moral of that challenge is that there is no excuse not to shoot CQB. It is a ton of fun, and emphases shooting, not the $ invested in the kit. My approach is minimalist (rhymes with "cheap"). I have cataracts and can't sprint from one line to the next, but still manage to shoot ok and have a tin o fun.

Fact is I almost had a disaster. During the warm up I discovered that some stripper clips would not let the loaded rounds slide off the clip. By the time the match started I had four clips that were bad, and a handful of "good" ones. So instead of using the ammo I had pre-loaded on clips for the match, I re-loaded the clips that had worked with fresh ammo. They worked ok in the match, but were slower than mag changes in the ARs.

My SKS has a poor trigger, whereas my ARs have match triggers. The SKS has a peep sight, but with my old eyes I shot groups twice the size of what I get with my ARs. Most targets were no better than 50% bulls.

Here is one of the warm up shoots. You can see a clip refuse to load and the me running out of time.

Scores today were very high. Hope it was because you did not want to be a "quilter".

And don't forget you are all invited to the Father's Day shoot next Sunday, at the Winona Range. Any rifle you want to shoot (AR's work very well.) You need 120 rounds of ammo, to shoot 100, 200 & 300.

We have lots of prizes. Bring your dad or kid an entry is free. Otherwise - $20.

PM me with your email address and I can send you more info.

Ganderite... that is some piece of outstanding shooting with the SKS, I am almost motivated enough to give it a try myself, but I sold my SKS when my range banned steel core. Naturally, today I was still shooting 7.62x39 (using the NEA upper I won earlier this year) but it's a lead core ammo by Dominion. My SKS was 99 bucks as well, 25 years ago at Le Baron in Montreal. I should pickup another one...

With having various rifle glitches, I ended up being the best of the worst.:d
I usually make a list of my stuff to take. The old brain isn't what it used to be. Anyway we were just about to form up for the match when I realized I didn't bring my sling. I figured I'd use a shoe lace from a pair of boots in my car.....boots that I also didn't bring:confused:. I remembered I had a piece of para cord in the car so quick ran and grabbed it and got back just in time to get into my rank. I tied up the para chord which work out OK. The cord is 7' long and doubled up was comfortable enough. I left it tied to the rifle and just took it off and on over my head.
And I don't have earlier Alzheimers. My wife and daughter had me tested. Really.

I can beat that. A few matches back, I brought out my son, and we leave early as it takes 90 minutes to get to Borden. He's old enough to assemble his own kit, but I was chasing him around, making sure he didn't forget anything. We get to Borden, I pop the trunk and my first thought is "Where is my range bag?". Eyes and ears and more importantly my pistol mags and single point sling are in it. I shoot a 1911 in .40, not a normal setup, and nobody had a suitable mag to borrow. I always have a backup set of eyes and ears in the trunk, and that trip we were pulling a bike trailer to pick up an old Honda sort of in the area. I cut off a length of strap from one of the ratchet tie downs and made a sling. That match when it came time to use my pistol, I pulled up an empty hand and pointed with my finger and went BAM BAM. Actually, my pistol scores with and without a real gun are very close.

Is that "modified prone"? What benefit vs regular prone?

It's designed to make you shoot from a position where you are not comfortable, and tests your ability to disregard pain while trying to make the best shots you can, while simulating shooting under a vehicle or other low obstruction. For us right handed shooters, it add the extra bonus of snow, slush, dirt, grass or mud getting thrown in your face and on your optics as the spent cases exit the ejection port, with the ground a mere inch or two away. You got to love this stage.

None . It's a little more difficult to shoot.

We lay on our strong side and shoot the rifle sideways. With a AR-15, I find it can be made very comfortable and stable by:

Collapsing the butt, so I can get a good sight picture through the optic,

Resting head on the ground,

Using middle finger on the trigger, instead of trigger finger,

Using the practice shoot to learn where to aim, to center the group.

I have found that I can get mostly bulls in this shoot.

On the other hand, I when it comes to the shooting on the move, I am happy to just get 10 hits, anywhere on the paper. Anyone got any coaching suggestions?
