I've just recently decided to join a club and get out to some ranges. I've always had an interest in LR shooting but never made the time to do so and really only shot when hunting (and even then most shots within 350 yards). Looking at choices in Ontario (Aurora) there doesn't seem to be a lot of options to join clubs with ranges 300 yards+. Checking out the ORA's site and some brief email communication with their secretary has me very interested (he's very busy and I don't want to hound him with questions). What I really want to know is how the ORA works, how often there are events, whether membership requires competition shooting, etc. Initially I just want to get out and learn how to shoot and get some consistency - from there who knows. If any ORA members want to post here or PM me I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

I joined up last year. I attended an introductory day and two Precision practice matches, but was not able to attend any more during the season due to other commitments. I wish I could have made it to more events. Next season for sure!

TONS of fun, professionally run, and the guys are more than willing to teach and pass on knowledge. No requirements to shoot competitively.

There is usually an ORA event going on somewhere just about every weekend from April to Sept. With one membership you can shoot at Cedar Springs, Winona, Kingston and of course Borden.
Everything from CQB and short range plinking to 1000 yard F Class and Target rifle events. Service Conditions, blackpowder cartridge (out to 1000 yards) and precision (sniper matches).

Feel free to PM me. I look after the Cedar Springs Club and can answer most of your questions about the ORA.

Send me a PM if you want to know more about Service Conditions, Service Rifle, and or Service CQB matches that are held quite frequently (just ask my wife... she'll say "too frequently") at Base Borden.

Most of the ORA action is at Borden which is actually the closest military range to Aurora I think.

There is opportunity to shoot Service CQB from 35 to 10 yards or stretch your range to 1000 yards for TR, F-class or what ever you have to shoot (Try a P14 Enfield with original iron sights like I did last year)

There are several competitions in each discipline each year and opportunities for practice, usually at longer ranges. Your membership fee entitles you to member rates for competitions and clinics. Practices are free (except Precision practices...which are really clinics so there a cost here).

The ORA is a competition oriented organization so most events and practices are oriented toward this. However you can bring out just about any rifle for any practice, as long as it will toss a bullet the distance you are shooting have fun (I have a buddy who just loves to play with his 6.5x55 Swede at 1000 yards or other vintage rifles.....when he isn't playing with one of his heavy barreled bolt actions)

One more for fun "discipline" are the Vintage / Fun shoots. These are suitable for just about any rifle and you get to shoot and static, snap (short exposure) and moving targets and 100, 200 and 300 yards. This was actually how I first got exposed to the ORA a couple of years ago and it was a great way to get introduced in a not very tense competitive environment.

What are your shooting interests? Do you want to shoot competitively? Do you want to try your hand and longer ranges with your hunting rifles? Give us some idea of what you are thinking you want to to and we can better help you decided if the ORA will give you what you want. You should also try to attend once of the Introductory Days which will give you an overview of the different disciplines practices by the ORA. You may find something you like that you did not know exists, or at the very least you will know what the heck folks are talking about when they discuss TR/F-class/Precision/Service Rifle/CQB/Vintage etc.

You are fortunate to live so close to Borden. One thing you can do now is sign up for some ORA training sessions to learn form those who are good at the various disciplines.

If you send me a PM with your real name and real email address, i can add you to the Vintage Rifle mailing list. The is a "Bring anything you want" shoot at 100, 200 and 300 yards. I sometimes use a different rifle at each distance, just to give them a day in the sunshine.
