What's this clinic about ?

The Precision rifle clinic prepares the shooter for competitions patterned after the course of fire shot by the DCRA or Dominion of Canada Rifle association at their Annual Prize meeting for Service Conditions held every year at CRPTC or Connaught Range and Primary Training Center near Shirley's Bay in the Kanata/Nepean area. The course of fire can be downloaded in PDF format at www.dcra.ca

These matches are shot monthly by the ORA or www.ontariorifleassociation.ca at CFB Borden , ON. The ORA follows the DCRA rulebook and course of fire . The purpose of this clinic is to prepare the competitor to shoot these matches.

Precision / Sniper Rifle Kit to Bring

* A safe precision/sniper rifle in at least .223 Rem caliber and larger. .308 Win is a common platform
* Hand operated target turrets on your optic already mounted to your rifle. 4.5 x 14 scopes are common. 6.5 x 20 scopes are seen frequently. 8 x 30 scopes are great optics for these matches. Scopes with a parallax adjustable side focus work well. Adjustable objective scopes work too, but more annoying to work with while in the prone position. Just don't show up with the stereotypical 3 x 9 coin operated hunting scopes because you will be wasting your time (and money)

* Last Sep 2013 Clinic we had some hunting scopes on the line, they were super frustrated with the coin operated turrets. I warned them, but they insisted. Now they are wiser from this experience. Please; go to school on their experiences. :)

Suggested scope choices

- Bushnell Elite 6400, 6500, Sightron
- Leupold Mark 4 LR/T , Nikon, Vortex Razor, Zeiss
- NightForce, US Optics, Premier Reticles, Schmidt & Bender, Swarovski

Suggested kit, not necessarily a requirement

* Rear bunny, sand bag, mono pod style rear rests work, too.
* Notebook to record your sight settings
* Anemometer (Kestrel-style) hand held wind gauges
* Spotting scope and tripod
* Rucksack, 3 day pack, Assault pack to carry your kit around the range
* Snacks, granola bars, nuts, fruit, extra fluids
* 200 rounds of safe, tested, reliable ammunition for your rifle (hopefully chronographed already)
* Sunscreen, bug dope, ballistic glasses, hearing defenders
* Extra food and water (someone always forgets)
* Screwdriver set - compact enough?
* OH Shzt Kit (if you don't know, I will teach you)
* Rain gear or appropriate foul weather gear
* Shooting mat / folding rifle case
* Ensure your rifle is zeroed for 100m
* Ensure your scope can do the "box" test reliably (Contact me, if you don't know what this is)

Questions?

* Ask me right here in this thread. Others might be curious with the same concerns.

If using a M14 clone, can this clinic be shot off an extended magazine or should a bipod be used?

Bipod for sure. There's sandbags, but they scratch the wood. You have an M14 bipod? I can bring mine if you need it. Now, shooting an M14 to 800 yards???? That will be interesting to see.

Question, is there classroom lecture first? What time do you want us there?

Timings and rough schedule posted. Thanks for reminding me about that.

Spaces ? Yes, I still have spaces. Some regular/ experienced competitors have signed up and paid me with the full understanding that this clinic is aimed at the newbie competitor (new to: competing, ORA, PR game, LR game, Mons Range, etc, etc).

Ammo / round count? Someone asked about the 100-200 requirement. Well, truth be told, it's more like a suggestion. Depending on how quickly or slowly the group moves along, we may have to adjust the tempo/tone/speed/rate of the program. That's a big variable when it comes to competition shooting. All part of the learning curve. :D

There is a post around this forum about how to grow the sport. Well, here's the answer: clinics and a welcoming environment. Many of you clinic veterans know my style and my brand of delivery... Enough said!

Questions? Bring them on! :D

Cheers and get the nooobies' backs!

Here's a question. Will we need to be in snow suites? I'll be surprised if Borden is snow free in three weeks at the rate we're going...

You just jinxed us!

Dress and overdress for the weather. One of the best mentors I ever had (including the TimFoo) was KeithC of the w w w.Milcun.com Shooting school. He always advocated, "There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing/kit choices." :D

We are at 16 people signed up. The more of a rookie you are, the more I'm very likely to sign you up sooner. I'm serious about this. I want lots of rookies, I know it sounds silly, but the reality is; if we don't grow this discipline then WTFornication good am I ??

:nest:

Cheers,

Okay, I was told that there is lots and lots of snow on the range. And it's 19 March and the snow ain't going away too quickly. Just a heads up.

I also have space available, but right now I'm kinda looking over the horizon and watching the snow melt. :D As funny as that sounds, the snow is accumulated in large piles here in Simcoe County north of York Region and Toronto.

Keep in touch right here! Updates will happen here....

Cheers,
Barney

Hopefully there will be a new snow fall the night before. The blowing snow should make reading wind all the way down range easier that using flags:p.
Last year we were told service rifles were being allowed in Precision Matches. Do you know if they will be allowed this year?

I hope this is still a go. Me and two buddies are dieing to come! I've already tested ammo and have 200 loads ready to go.

Get in touch with Tactical Teacher and register. I'm registered with a couple of friends as well. We're all really looking forward to it.

Is every one staying up there or driving each day??

I pretty much message tactical teacher every second day asking for a update LOL

Long range (pun) forecast is rain, 9C. So snow should be gone, just we'll sink into the mud...
