ORA Precision Rifle Match 7 Sat 11 Oct 2014 Results UP! Debrief here!

I am down in Toronto for the day after doing extended family after the long weekend. I will be home tomorrow at a real keyboard and I can get the stats up properly not like on this silly iPhone keyboard which is crazy mad with typing errors.

So I will get it all posted up soon

Cheers, Barney.

Well, I can finally sit down and get this set of results up. By the way, if you have never been to the new Ripley's Aquarium in Toronto, it's quite an eye opener. I have both my sons together for only a few hours on Tuesday, yesterday and we chose to do the tourist gig at the aquarium. It's fantastic and I just learned more and more. Don't get old, this happens to you! :D

Anyways, here we go:

Time for Thanks:

Many thanks go to my butts officers, MikeT and HarryK. They make things run super smoothly down in the butts and we end up with great target presentation

Many thanks for our RSO JohnB since He makes things roll regarding range bookings/cancellations/confusion/clarity/target preparation. Life is great

Many thanks for the the super attitude demonstrated by the competitors for their work in the butts and during the butts changes

Many thanks for the kind folks at Ellwood Epps for providing many door prizes: gift certificates for $50, $100 and $150. Wes and his staff are rock stars

Many thanks for the folks who helped me set up the chairs at the awards presentations.

Thanks again Barney for all your hard work. The compatition has stepped up with some very high and tight scores. We won't be to the next match because it is deer season so see everyone in the spring.

Ryan

Hey thanks to Barney and John for all of the hard work. Thanks to Harry and Mike for running the butts and to all the guys who come out and make it a great time.

This was my first season in PR and it's definitely addictive. I highly recommend Barney's PR clinic to anyone who wants to compete or even just to learn about long distance shooting in general.

I'll probably not make the next match due to work, but see you all again next season!

Food for thought over the winter...

In the ORA Precision Championship 42% of 28 shooters scored 90% or better. The winning team scored 96%. The top shooter scored 98%. This course of fire is challenging, but some of us are learning it very well. So, how about making it a wee bit more challenging?

What if the short range targets were moved 100 yards further back for the short range events? For example, the 200 yard Rapid Follow Up shot at 300 yards, the 300 yard Agony Snap shot at 400 yards, the 500 yard Snap shot at 600 yards, The 600 yard OSOK eliminated, the 700 yard Shoot No Shoot event remains as is, the 800 yard Harassing Fire remains as it is.

Comments welcome.

While I pooped the bed on this one (and this year in general), I agree with Terry. The thing with this kind of match is that people start to learn the course of fire, and how to deal with very specific situations. Thats what I like about PRS style matches; the CoF never looks the same, and its more than just an F-Class match with a bit of dynamic content.

While we have limitations working in the confines of military ranges, there are definitely things that can be done. The guys out in BC have some interesting stages that involve things like barricades and simulated rooftops. They shoot movers at 600. That could be added. As could position shooting; kneeling and standing. A stage could have five shots fired with your strong side, five shots fired with your weak side (shot right handed and left handed). The distance the movers are shot at could be changes at every match. Movers at 100 could be done with Fig 14s...

I totally agree with you guys about needing to change it up. Barricades would be a nice change. We could also make to V smaller on figure 11 and change out the figure12 for a 14 at 500. Adding/changing the mover to 600 would also be cool.

Should we make this into it thread instead of having it buried in this one?

I'm all for new challenges, however I would caution that any format changes need to be evaluated for possible impact to new shooters and the overall growth of the program. Barney has talked about growth many times, so we know it's high on the ORA priorities. I don't have a solution, just putting it out there.

I agree with all the above comments about being up for new challenges and about changing the format for new shooters. This was my first year shooting PR. I shot TR for over 10 years and bit and then went over to try out PR. I must say I am not 100% use to the COF. But, with one season under my belt, I am sure I will get the hang of it.

This is my 2 cents, I am not sure if I am going off topic but here it goes anyway.

1. We should discuss this with the new PR match directors and see what they have to say about changing the COF format.

2. There is a programs and council meeting coming up in November. Changing the COF should be brought up to those meetings and get the approval from council and see what their stand point is. I hope to plan on being there for those meetings since I am on council member with the ORA.

3. Each CFB range has their own range standings orders, since all the PR matches are shot at Borden, we have to get their permission and approval from them to use mock up roof tops etc, as stated by Kris.

4. Questions to ask ourselves, do we want to change the COF at the Provincial level or eventually change it up as well at the National level? I know it will take some time to change everything. We will then have to bring it up with the DCRA if we want anything to change at the National level. If we add objects to the Provincial level, how do we prepare for the National level matches if things don't change there. Unless we split the matches with some matches with the "old COF" and some with the "new COF". Or should a new type of PR match be introduce into the system?

5. Needless to say, if we stick with the with the COF the way it is, I agree it should be switch up. I do agree that the COF should be moved back 100 yards. As stated by Terry. I hate that 200 yards rapid follow up:bangHead:

Like I've said, this is my opinion and coming from a newbie PR shooter.

The CoF is up to the match director.

ORA SR match director changed the CoF (attendance increased substantially, btw). Ontario shooters have no trouble shooting the national matches. If a shooter can only shoot a specific match with specific stages, that speaks to the quality of their training.

This is what the BC guys use on a CF range:

Works as both a barricade and a rooftop... notice the cutouts?

Mover should not be at one distance only. When people always see the same speed of mover at the same distance, they don't learn to deal with movers properly.

I would be into mixing things up a little as well. There are a lot of us shooting high scores, and maybe we can shrink the v-bull on the fig.11. I would love to see more things like barricades, roof tops, or different positions to shoot from. Maybe it's an altogether different/new game, I don't know. What happens at the national and provincial level is also a very big consideration, and a very big ship to turn, if you follow me. Perhaps the PR shooting stays the same, and we incorporate some different matches during the season at Borden. It keeps us "training" for NSCC, and gives us exposure to other opportunities, maybe 3 or 4 matches pure NSCC format, and the same amount of something new or different. Keeps us moving forward and evolving, while not getting mired in Provincial/National shooting politics.

This looks super fun. Can we try it and write up a protocol for John? Or vice-versa?
