ORA's CQB Matches - Getting ready...

a couple of questions.....

AR15 mags - Is it better to run double stacked mag pouches, or single stacked mag pouches, or single mag pouches?

I'm thinking of running medium size 5.11 dump pouch for empty mags. What do you guys think? Many guys running the same set up?

I prefer to run my mag pouches stacked. My vest has six pouches built in and I added two double mag pouches on my support side. I found that the double mag pouches were not that handy with Pmags as the external ribs cause them to bind and stick together so it is impossible to draw just one out....so I use them as single pouches. I have seen some double mag pouches that have an internal divider that serves the same purpose, so either will work I would say.

My set up allows me to put 4 mag on my support side where they are all pretty easy to access to rapid mag changes. Because my pouches are stacked, there is always material between adjacent mags so they don't bind together. We never run more than 5 mags total so with one in the rifle to start I am good to go with the 4. My other integral pouches don't get used for CQB but are handy for SR so my rig works well for both for me.

Dump Pouch - I have a large sized one from CP Gear. A dump pouch is pretty essential for SR (IMO) and darn handy at CQB. Lets me keep my empty mags separate from my full ones and it means I can carry them without putting my empties back in my pouches. I try to keep things simple. Charged mags go in mag pouches....and only charged mags go in there. Drawing out a mag you think is full but ain't....blows chunks.

You may not have time to put your empty mags in a dump pouch since the exposures (amount of time between whistle blows) are only a few seconds. I have seen some people use bump pouches though.

And listen to TR308shooter... he knows from experience all the while we old pharts are laughing at his M14 fumbling in the back ground. To add insult to injury, all the M14 jokes were flying from yours truly

It's all good , baby! :D

Cheers,
Barney

Just make sure your pouch can hold six full size mags. A definite must for SR, and super damn convenient for CQB. You won't be tossing them into the pouch while you're shooting a stage in CQB, but, afterwards, it makes life real easy to be able to just toss the mags you dropped into the dump pouch until you go bomb up again. It's really the only pocket you'll use while on the range. I put everything in it. Apparently, others toss their empty coffee cups and garbage into it too....

I bought a tactical tailor and I'm super happy with it.

SPRTN308 nailed it. I don't put empties in my dump pouch during a stage, that's what the range floor is for. I use it to put empties in as I pick them up on the walk back after scoring and patching.

For SR, you don't get to walk back and pick them up, so I put them in my dump pouch as I'm shooting.

Thanks Wolverine!

I got my Eotech EXPS and it looks awesome and rigid!

This is my first time having a fancy HWS and my first red dot was Strikefire Vortex. I have a couple of questions to all of HWS/red dot nuts out here:

-When I move my head around while looking at the recticle, the recticle moves around too?!? Why is that?

- When I look at the recticle while pointing the Eotech down (while I am sitting down) there are times where the recticle disappear, and then after I move my head around, it reappears?!? How come?!

With a quality red rod like your Eotech, when you move your head around (and hold the rifle still and on target) the dot should stay on target. The better quality optic, the less parallax effect you get when moving your head around.
So in theory you should be able to shoulder quickly, put dot on target, fire and hit it, even if you don't get your perfect cheek weld.

As for it disappearing, you must be moving your eye line beyond the angle at which the retical is visible. That's my guess at least.

If I'm wrong on either count, somebody more knowledgeable will be along shortly to help us both out! :D

For fast access, do you guys think 5.11 mag pouches cut it? From the pictures and videos I've seen, guys don't use pouches that have cover. If there is cover, they are able to slide it into the pouches. Do 5.11 mag pouches do this? Guys your experience?

As with any kit take it slow and try as many different setups as you can until you find one that fits every aspect of what you are doing. Try out friends kit, try it at a shop, buy used until you find what you like. And then save up and get the exact rig you want. Your own body mechanics will dictate how easy anything is to do and certain aspects of some kit will not work for you no matter what you do.

I will say one thing for the double stacked mags though, if you are looking for cover at premium, every inch matters and having a really thick rig can get you shot in whatever part is sticking out, or if you are actually training to include the things like supine or urban prone, they tend to get in the way. Nothing like jamming mags or a plate into your ribs. Same as having to many admin or specialty pouches. This is my own practical experience of course and years of being confronted with common sense.

As much as with anything, just remember the training is more important then the kit. Armatures train until they get right, professionals train until they can't.
