10/22 is perfect for what you are looking for and... for gophers. I'm sure she'll be very happy.

There are so many good rim fire .22 LR choices- browning t-bolt, old mossberg semi autos, marlin 60, 795 semi autos, winchester pump actions, browning trombone pump actions, norinco jw-21 semi autos, cz 452 455, 457 bolt actions ....
 
Even when I still had pellet guns I couldn't interest my spousal unit to take up shooting at all. She don't like fishing either. She does let me keep all the shooting and fishing gear I can hide from her tho and that's why I've kept her for almost 27 years! I get my ME TIME alone or with a buddy and don't have to put up with anyone wanting to know when it's time to go home or crabbing about the rain and stuff like that. Most of the time I'm alone as it's hard to find a buddy who doesn't whine about the same things. lol
