Well, on Thursday, I finally sprung for the Mossberg 500 Field in 12ga, from Cabelas. (With Money Order, since I lack a credit card.)

The long wait begins.

Does anyone have any comments with regards to the quality of the wood, any information about the chokes, recoil, etc?

Not too sure about the wood because I have only owned older ones. But mine have beautiful grain patterns for "cheap" pumps. Recoil is pretty much the same as any pump 12g. Not too harsh, but you know it's there. The forends always seem loose to new shooters. They aren't, that's the way they are made. Not a whole lot to say about the chokes other than they work. The receiver is painted aluminum. The gun holds 5+1 but as far as I know they all come with a plug that lets you put in 2+1. Something that people don't realize is that in order to take the barrel off you need to have your forend released.

Ya thats why I don't like 500's because of only 1 forearm action bar and the loose loud feel of the, even my 835 is looser than I like in a pump but they do shoot nice for a cheap gun.

i prepher the 535 for the simple reason that the 500s seem to have a loud rattel .i looked at all of them when i was buying and went with the 535 it has a lot less rattel and i can shot the 3.5 shells if needed DUTCH

Your gun is likely ported my recent production gun is. Reduces recoil nicely. (it is louder) Wood is machine checkered not pressed. It is birch and stained. Plain but very strong and durable. Dual beads and very fairly priced. I like mine and I own several guns that cost 4 time as much as the Mossy 500. It is going duck hunting with me tomorrow.

regards, Darryl

I bought the Mossberg 500 combo (Field/Security) a few months ago, and have no complaints at all. Still working on the pump to get it silky smooth, but it functions perfect. My Remington stays in the cabinet. Very happy, especially for the price.

I have 2 500's, one is the feild model, the other is a slug gun, I've had no issues with either one. Stuckon308 pretty much covered everything you need to know about it. I would add though that the only thing that rattles on mine is the plug in the mag tubes when the guns aren't loaded, put two in the mag and it has no room to move around anymore. Not likely anyone would go around shaking their gun while hunting anyway.

Oh good point workin man. I have always put little rubber grommets on my plugs. They don't rattle after that.
