Ordered my first SKS! Russian laminate
Ordered from Gotenda anyone with any experience ordering from them?
Are there sks rifles usually in decent condition normally proably be a bit before I see it with all going on currently.
I ordered a russian laminate as I just like the look of them more and have read they are more durable stronger and less likely to crack price was 349.99 Days of those 150$ ones are gone from stores anyway.
I have watched some videos on cleaning processes and think im going to go with boiled water and mineral spirits for metal parts and for the stock heat it with hair dryer or heat gun slightly to remove cosmoline with rags as I do not have a iron here.
Depending on condition of the rifle I plan to refinish the stock wood only no plastic tapco stocks or bubbaing as I have read around here although some of them look cool to ea there own LOL other then refinishing keeping it original I know some guys are not big on this either but I like the look of them refinished and IF its not a collectable one and just going to be a shooter.
However if its matching non refurb etc or somehow a collectable one I would not touch it but I doubt its going to be lol.
Plans to use stripper on stock Sand stock start at 80 120 220 then 0000 wool clean off minwax stain not sure if I will use red mahogoney, dark walnut, red oak or expresso yet... I already have dark walnut here though.
After staining it 400 gritt the colour down some and lighten up some of it then im not sure if I should use tung oil to finush or tru oil 0000 steel wool between coats of finish and may even use some 1500 wetsand on the very finished coat once fully dry depending on how she looks
(Of course all depends on if its worth leaving orig or not)
Any advice for the cosmoline clean up or refinishing procedure feel free to chime in.
Also if anyones interested in throwing up there refinished stock sks throw it in comments like to see some others that have done them espicially laminate ones
