Ordering a scope fron the States

This is information that was given to me when I was inquiring about trying to buy a scope by mail order from the states.
“If Cabela’s, or ANY US dealer, ships a rifle scope into Canada, they need to have an “International Import Certificate” (that they really cannot get), jointly issued by the “Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs & International Trade” and the “United States Department of Commerce - Bureau of Industry and Security”. I know that some US retailers circumvent this by declaring rifle scopes as something different.
But it is UNLAWFUL and not without consequences to the US dealer, if uncovered. “
 
Just bought a scope on ebay from Colorado and had no problem getting it into Canada. The government people did open up the packagae and tagged me with the GST and a $5.00 fee for opening it. Did not need anything else.
 
Lemon Hart Your scope was lucky to arrive here, it is not Canada customs that the problem is with, but the US Homeland security and border protectiojn services who monitor the things leaving the US, If your package had been stopped for random inspection before leaving US ,about 15% of all packages shipped out ofthe US are checked, it would have been seized, if there was suffecient info on the package to track back to the shipper he could be charged with a felony criminal offence.( illegal exportation of controlled goods)
I am sure that the actual number of cases where severe prosecution is followed up on is small,but the potential DOES exist. The US government has taken a very solid stand on what they deem exportable and to whom. The laws that were passed shortly after 911 have HUGE teeth if the offence is followed up by someone in authority. I know of many suppliers who still ship to other countries despite it being against the law of their country, which is not a bad thing for us up here, but if they do get caught the penaties are real, check with Midway USA if you want to know how harsh.
 
I have bought scopes out of the states mind you i bring them over myself but the one thing i find funny is that on one of my trips i was stopped by US custom before i hit the canadian border (think they were waiting for me since they left after me and i was the only one stopped) besides the point. I told them what i had they looked and asked how i liked the scopes .... and sent me on my way. If it is like what everyone is saying then they should have taken them away?
 
You were REALLY lucky. If they had decided to enforce the letter of the law, it would have been more than just losing the scopes. You could have been walking home once you were released.
 
These "egress" checks are getting far more regular in the last 2 years and depending on the border official some bad things have taken place.
I would suggest if the scope you got by them had been an Elcan or something deemed "military or police use" things would have been entirely different. I would hazard a guess you had been to Kesslerings near Bellingham
they are known for "alerting" the authorities regarding Canadain shoppers. If dealing there best to NOT park in their parking lot so the cameras will not catch you. They do get paid a percentage of the value of goods seized

Keep in mind as a Canadian in the U.S. you have NO rights.

You can be jailed and held for up to 30 days without being charged, and have your goods & vehicle seized.

Not really worth the risk of saving a few buck in my books.......

There are members of the board who have been stopped in the U.S. and hassled over items they were bringing back.Some were detained for several hours and I was told they did not have a pleasant experience.

Those items are controlled by the U.S. Commerce Dept.

The Commerce Dept. requires Export permits an EVERTHING under it's control.There are no exemptions.

They got in trouble a while back and clamped down on everything

In order to get the U.S. Export permit, you need to get a Canadian Import permit from the Dept of Foreign affairs.

I’ve purchased a number of scopes from the states going to Cabela’s without any problems but was never stopped and I did claim them on the Canadian side. I also ordered some Conetrol rings and base last summer for one of my rifles that came by mail. Never had any problems either but maybe I was just lucky. I’m going to check into it next time when I head out to the states. I know I can’t order scopes by mail but thought it was never a problem bringing items over the border as long as you claimed the items and pay the taxes!!
 
350 the Canadian customs is NOT the problem, Homeland security is, those are the guys on the otherside of the border who Mr. Bush keeps in a constant state of paranoia about us terrorists of the north crossing the 49th .
The powers this law enforcement agency has is staggering. I have sen 1st hand what they do to those who flaunt US laws, it ain't pretty! And they work with impunity.
