Ordering antique parts these days.

So I've got a bit of a conundrum. I've got a proper 1860s vintage Remington New Model Army that's just a lovely thing but it snapped its bolt spring the other day. They're pretty easily available online in the states, BUT my concern is that because modern replicas are super common, the packaging would probably be labeled as such, AND I don't have an RPAL, Could this be problematic with the new laws governing handgun parts? It's only a couple of buck so no biggie if it gets seized but I'd rather not get CBSA grumpy with me.

I’d say you’ll probably have a harder time finding shops that will sell/ship to Canada than getting it through customs, I order off Dixiegunworks and Numrich all the time, apart from long waits at customs I’ve yet to have anything seized.

That said I’ve also found I’m limited by what they have in stock because I haven’t found a single other shop that’ll sell out of the states.

To my knowledge, gun parts....including handgun parts are unregulated. So do not require an RPAL, to purchase. A frame or receiver,(which contains gun serial number) is considered a regulated part.
Here in Canada, you could try Rusty Wood Trading. The shop carries an extensive line of aftermarket revolver parts. Including Uberti and Pietta. Peter can also advise on which part should fit in your Remington. Otherwise, VTI is a good source. For both Pietta and Uberti repro parts. Dixie Gun Works often stocks original parts for some guns. Also worth a try. Numrich, another source. All three US companies ship to Canada, without any problem.
As already mentioned, waiting for parts to clear customs is the hardest part.

ps: Wolff Springs may be another source. Ships to Canada

That’s a super good point you make about Rusty Wood Trading co, OP you mentioned reproduction parts, I’d even check Marstar, I may be putting out something already well known but I was surprised to find out how many repro cap and ball revolver parts they stock, and of course they can order in. Might be worth checking into.

Edit; sorry realized what you had actually mentioned was a concern about being mistaken for modern handgun parts. Still worth looking into if modern reproduction parts work for you. Saves the customs wait.

MosinMan13: I completely missed Marstar! Thanks for pointing that out. Before the handgun "freeze", Marstar was a well-known retailer for reproduction cap and ball and 1873 Colt revolvers....Pietta, etc. Should be able to access parts through them, as well. A site sponsor too, like Rusty Wood.

ps: Just did a quick search of the Marstar site. Don't see a bolt/trigger spring currently listed, but likely able to order in.

Awesome, Thanks everyone! I was looking at ordering from DGW, and I'm local-ish to Rusty Wood so I'm thinking of popping in there if it doesn't work out well with my limited skills. I've got a bunch of other stuff like a Winchester 1895 that was my great grand fathers that needs a little freshening up too.

Ottersey: Swapping out the bolt/trigger spring is relatively easy. A job you can do yourself, with basic tools(Be sure to use properly fitting screwdriver bits!)

Still, I'd suggest giving Peter a call first, before tackling the job, yourself. He can certainly offer the expert advice you need. Or, you can simply kill two birds with one stone, and have him work on both your Remington, and your great-grandfather's 1895.

Made a little trip down to Lee Valley and grabbed a whole set of Grace gunsmith's screw drivers. I bought pretty much every single internal part from Dixie Gun Works and it was only $60!

Glad to hear it, and surprised to hear Lee valley had gun tools. I think you’ll find the Dixie Gun works stuff ships a little faster than the other options too, my last order I used them and Numrich at the same time and DGW was 2 weeks quicker to my door.

For muzzleloaders I use track of the wolf. And I’ll purchase parts directly through Barbie Chambers and a few other friends of mine to avoid wait times and hassles. I’ve used Dixie before and they’re great to deal with. To justify the shipping buy several parts kits though.
