Hey all,
Im new to the forum, and i thought id make my first post a question. My appologies if there is already a thread on this.

I was wondering what methods or systems you guys use to organize your brass. Not what containers you use, or that you separate calibers, but how you organize brass of the same caliber.

I have just bought my first centerfire, and i eventually want to start reloading. I know that precision shooters sort by weight. Does this work between different brands of cases or do you keep all your brass sorted by brand as well?

I don't :)

One bag for each different caliber. Inspect every piece betwen each firing, then put it away. If I needed better than a clay pigeon at 200 accuracy, I'd do more, but that's plenty good for me.
 
The more you sort, separate and record keep, the more information you'll glean as relates to accuracy, longevity and what adjustments are working with what. As curtmg points out, diminishing returns does come into play so the frigging you do will increase exponentially with the accuracy you want and, there is a limit to what you can get.

I'd say sort by brand and weight for starts. You can decide as you go if its worth the effort. A lot will depend on you and your firearm.
 
for most of my shooting by make works OK. For long range perssion I would think weight volume etc. Work with what u have for now. It will serve u well if u buy the same brand & lot # of loaded ammo now. There are lots af reloaders in Camrose & we would be glad to talk & help if we can, AJ
 
I sort my brass into bags by calibers first and then by headstamps. This works for me. When use the brass it then goes into a different bag and mark it used . Then I put the amount of times that it was used.

Are you guys into precision shooting?

I don't sort any brass. That being said, I don't see any variation in accuracy from head stamp, to weight, to number of times fired. Currently my brass consists of R-P, Winchester and various military cases. This is for a couple of 223's and a 22-250.

Maybe it's just luck or maybe the accuracy change isn't noticeable when one shoots varmints.

I think the only thing that really matters is the # of firings. I sort by headstamp for bureaucracy measures :D and by caliber... well, I just don't wanna die.


Oh and that's for my rifle reloading, I sort my pistol brass only by caliber, nvm the # of reloads and headstamps
 
I reload for handgunning, and don't bother sorting my brass. At this point, my accuracy is limited by me, and not so much the finer points of reloading.
 
There is good reason to keep your brass separated by the amount of times it is fired. I like to have at least 50 - 60 rounds (depending on the box) that I rotate on a regular basis. I mark the boxes with a colored sticker when the ammo is fired off. If I'm hunting, I very seldom carry more than 10 rounds and if I'm target shooting, I'll bring the whole box. Now, I also like to keep each batch of brass together. I also don't mix either batches or brands. Some of the old Dominion and Norma brass I have is some of the best ever made in my opinion and just seems to go on forever as long as it is taken care of properly and the loads aren't to hot.
For this reason, I get a little anal about keeping certain lots together. Once a lot gets below 20 rounds, it will get relegated to a weigh pile made up of the same brand. If the mixed lot doesn't perform consistently (it usually does) it gets filed into the scrap bin.
This may seem like a lot of trouble, but it's worth the effort in the long run. The batches normally need to be trimmed at the same time and annealed at the same time as well. All in all, it saves a lot of grief in the end and is very easy to do. It also ensures consistent performance and eliminates another variable when things go awry.
