(original) AR-10 vs AR-15

Darkstang - Don't look for any rationality behind why some firearms are non-restricted, restricted or prohibited. The present situation is the cumulative result of different generations of legislation, based primarily on opinion and ignorance, and a desire to regulate for the sake of regulating.

Too bad it's restricted.

Thats not a bad thing unless you are a hunter.

The extra paperwork, hassle, storage regs, ATT etc... Takes away any interest in such firearms, for me anyways. I <might> get into the restricted game one day, but so far i've avoided it like the plague.

I still havent figured out why AK's are prohib and CZ858's are non. Govt thinking goes along with a "B" movies plot line!! Why should the AR10 & 10B be any different.

Whoa watch it there, I like my VZ58/CZH2003 just fine.. I don't want it to become prohib thanks ! better yet why are AK's prohib and some of the Valmet hunters and all VEPRs non-restricted when they are basically the same rifle. ( reciever) Explain that!

VEPR's are prohib. Valmet M78 and M78 Hunters were prohib till Valmet of Finland #####ed to the goverment that these rifles are hunting rifles and not "assault weapons". They were taken off the prohib list as a result.

i heard it was because alot of northern native hunters used those firearms for hunting pressuring the gov to relax there prohibitions.

I would bet it was a federal minister who owned one, but any of the above stories could be true, as I doubt the reason will ever be made public.

I wonder if a freedom of information request could help shed some light on the matter, but whom to send it to ??

I wonder if a meticulously documented "clean room" approach could be used to defeat the named prohibs. It was used in the early days of PC's to produce the first infamous "clones" of the IBM PC's BIOS. Basically, draw up a specs sheet as detailed as one could without providing any drawings, or alternatively provide a manufacturer with a so-called "parts kit" basically all the parts to a firearm except for the receiver, and ask them to build a receiver that would fit all the parts, it <should> not be classifiable as a "variant" since, stictly speaking, an original was <not> used as a basis for a design, but rather is an entirely new design that happens to fit some parts. It's all theoretical of course, but still ... Food for thought.

I know there are AK clones out there, the Valmets, but these have been out of production for years. What i'm thinking about is more or less a new production variety, that would escape the "variant" net. If such a thing could be built, and approved, for <any> of the named prohibs, then the same technique could be used to defeat the rest of the 12(4) and 12(5) prohibitions. Well, at least those designs that aren't still covered by patents and such that is.

AK's look evil and vz58's are unheard of. Here's my take on it....

If you told some granola crunching torontonian that aks had suddenly become legal, they'd have a #### fit. If you told that same person that vz58's are legal they probably say 'huh?' then just forget about it.

We should be thankful they just forget :p
