I finally ended my search for a combo gun with a savage 24 30-30 over 20 gauge. Curious how many others have them and how they've treated you?

I'm trying to come up with a solution for a better rear sight, and thinking about milling the front post off the barrel band and either having it or the barrel dovetailed to hold a better front sight (mines a little damaged not to mention hard to see anyways)

Haven't had a chance to see how well it is regulated yet (fingers crossed)

What have you guys got for combos/drillings

I had one in .222/20ga years ago. I thought it would be the answer to a versatility question, turned out it wasn't particularly good at either.

A buddy picked up a new style plastic stocked one last year contrary to my advice...it's for sale.

That said, I hope you are happy with yours.

Is his the new-new (black and red plastic) savage 42 or the savage 24 (black synthetic)? I've heard some not so great stuff about the the new 42's, the older synthetic stocked 24's I've heard are a bit heavier/more unwieldly, but everything about the wood 24's most people won't part with them, so I have high hopes for this gun.

I have a savage 2400 12ga/308 beautiful gun
Nice gun!
How do you like the rifle barrel under the shotgun? I had my heart set on having the rifle on top (in my head it makes more sense)
can you fire both of those without breaking the action, or is it just one barrel per break?

Were the 2400's not made by Valmet? I had two 30-30/.20ga and neither one had barrel regulation within a yard of each other at 20 yards. Both rifle barrels were very accurate and the 20ga useless. The only good ones IMO were the old .22/.410 with side frame selector.Harold

I have a holosun on the newer savage 42. Great little combo for taking a walk in the woods. Mind you... Im using a 410/22lr combo. Idk how it would fair on 12g or 30-30.

Need to do some work on the trigger though... what a train wreck.

I never thought much of the new savage 42 models, not for 400 dollars or more. But when I was able to buy one for half price I found my opinion had changed. It has tight lock up and I like the external hammer with the selector on it. More than the double triggers on my chiappa double badger. The chiappa is a nice little gun but I think the savage is better.

The chiappa is a full choke vs the savage cylinder bore. The extractors on it are better than the system on the savage. But I really like being able to carry the savage with the hammer down.

My old .22/,410 is bang on rifle and shotgun and throws nice tight patterns out to 30 yards.Unusual for a .410 Harold

I have a Savage 24F with .223Remington over 12gauge. I think I will like it more if I use it more, but so far I'm not disappointed.

I have the 22/410 and have had it since I was 13. Took my first grouse with it. Sure compared to the newest 22's they are not much, but back in the day it was a blast. I had a cartridge for grouse or a rabbit if I came across them.

Mine smashes huns out to 30 yards. I located a old box of Federal 3" factory 3/4 oz loads. Wish they still made them..........head and shoulders above the 11/16 offered today.Harold

No experience with the Savage but I have personal experience with the Sauer combo in 16 gauge/30-06 and I have been using my Heym 20/7mm R since I ordered it in new from Germany about 30 years ago. Both guns superbly accurate and perfectly regulated and have claw mounted quick detachable scopes that return exactly to zero when reattached. I have used the Heym annually and it has done the job excellently on moose and deer as well as grouse, take 'em as they come. It is so versatile and so perfect for my hunting that it is almost always my go to gun. The versatility is built in to these guns but don't expect an inexpensive machine made Savage to perform as well as a carefully fitted European combo gun, they have been making these things to a very high standard for the pickiest clients in the world for 100 years. These European guns sell in Canada for a fraction of their real value and are a true bargain here. Quality does count in firearms.

Its the black and red plastic job.

Had the 223 over 20 gauge ,, the 20 gauge worked good .. I wanted it because of the 223 and the amount of yotes around .. It was not real accurate .. I found a picatilly rail and tried a scope on it.. It shot alright but not good enough too make a yote gun .. Not much need for a 223 that is only a 100 yard gun

I've got a 24C in 22/20 ga and love mine. 22 is really accurate and shooting federal prarie storm I get good patterns out to 35 yds or so even with the cylinder bore. I didn't like the sights on mine either and ended up putting a Burris 2.5x20 on it and it works great. Sighted in for the rifle at 50 yds and out to 25yds same aiming point for shotgun. Any further I have to start aiming high.

I had a nice Voere 16ga/222rem.
One of the better combo guns in my opinion.
I had thought it would be the perfect small game/yote gun. Go hunt rabbits and still have a gun capable of taking down a yote if one jumps.
Turns out it was more of a novelty for me, never did much hunting with it.
