I’m off to Ottawa this weekend and was wondering if anyone could provide me with names of a few LGS within the Ottawa city limited. I’m looking for a store that sells new and used restricted. Thanks

- That Hunting and Fishing Store (Richmond) - Ok prices, decent selection
- Stittsville Shooting Ranges (Stittsville) - Good prices, small restricted selection, ranges on site
- Cabelas (typical)
- Sports Action (St. Laurent area) - Haven’t been in here in awhile, but several years ago they did have a large non-restricted selection. I don’t know if they sell restricted stuff.

If you have limited time, I’d be checking out the top two.

FYI, Sports Action hasn't been at St. Laurent in almost two years now. They are how at Riverside Dr, besides Hogsback/Mooney's Bay and yes, they do sell restricted, pistols mainly.

The largest restricted selection would be Cabelas. Second is Sports Action on Brookfield and Riverside. Sylvana, the owner, will beat or match any advertised price and will negotiate on used/consignment items. Third is Hunting and Fishing store and last would be Stittsville shooting ranges which only has a few restricted items at any given time but lots of rifles and shotguns.

While I was working in Ottawa for a few months I visited SportsAction and Cabelas. It's sad but Cabela's is the main player there. SportsAction really pissed me off because I went in to look for a SVT40 they had listed on their site. I show up and they said they have been sold out of them for a long time.

On top of that, I went to try out some handguns. They wouldn't take off the trigger lock, I explained I wanted to feel the trigger wall and reset. They finally took it off but told me I couldn't dry fire it, I had to use snap caps. I asked if they were serious and they were. I said no thanks and walked right out. If you're not willing to let me test the gun fully I won't spend a dime at your store.

What's wrong with using snap caps? Won't affect trigger feel any. Were they willing to provide them so you could dry fire?

Sports Action is garbage. My friend bought a pistol there and had nothing but issues of them going past deadlines on it arriving. Then he ordered a AR there and same thing. After a year he finally called his credit card company to get a refund.

Well to test trigger reset I have to load the gun with 2 snap caps, fire the gun with the snap cap. While holding the trigger I have to eject the snap cap and then after checking reset eject the other snap cap.

So for a maybe 15sec check of a few resets I have to screw around to protect a floor gun they will never sell.

It's just bad business practice. You don't inconvenience the customer.

I’ve been to Sportaction and the prices on guns is stupid high. She says she’s a small local shop and can’t compete with these online giants (which are also small local shops, just with better websites).

Sports action has the worst website imaginable. I don't understand how the owner believes having a really bad website will help drive customers to their store.

I went to Sports Action once and inquired about what made their 350$ plane Jane 91/30 worth so much.
I got a BS answer that made me decide not to go back.
THFS is pretty decent
Cabelas is worth visiting although the gun selection is less impressive than you'd think. They probably have more guns at Sail.

They probably will sell the floor gun, discounted or not, as they're a small shop. I also doubt your time is so precious that you can't spend 10 seconds to load a pair of snap caps and rack the slide one extra time.

To be clear, I have never done business with the shop in question nor am I likely to.
