Ouch! Recoil!

x2 on liking the recoil. My first gun was an sks and I cant (wont) shoot .22 anymore... feels like a toy. I also got my first shotgun (mossberg 500) this week and ive been shooting the heck out of it. The experience always puts a grin on my face. I think ill get into skeet...
 
I can't imagine being crouched in a swamp ramming off a box of 378 Wby like I do at ducks and geese.

And yes, I was around in the guten alten tag when we had 1 7/8 #2 lead to sling at honkers. Funny, my results weren't much better than they are with steel. Hmm...
 
I like recoil. Last week I shot 50 win 3" slugs in less then 5 minutes. (trying out a new to me win 1300 defender).
I had a blast, and just a bit of a sore shoulder.

I let 2 complete noobs who never shot anything before shoot a few slugs out of my 870 last week. The grin on their faces lasted the whole week :D You should have heard the "F.CK YEAH !!!" shouts over and over again...
A real gunnut needs to love recoil.
 
I don't mind recoil, but my 14" fabarm with 3" 1 oz slugs at 1760 fps (rated) hurts me after 5 or 10. It is way more of a jolt than getting punched in boxing.
 
Yeah I find 3inchers from my 14, the recoil isnt what gets me...I find after alot of shots that I get a headache from the concussion...this is for indoor use on small ports...
 
I bought a few boxes of 3 1/2" 2 1/2oz turkey loads during the season. They make your vision blurry feeding them through my Nova. I don't know if i'm just addicted to the massive power burst or just a sucker for punishment but i load a few up every trip out.
I have a few videos of the gun literally jumping out of friends hands when i let em try it out.
I had a buddy ask to try my gun while shooting skeet. He loaded it then told me he was about to piss himself and asked if i'd take his turn and handed me the gun. The mother furker loaded one of my turkey loads in on the 3rd round and i almost did a back flip!

Correct shooting form makes all of the difference, I'm a scrawny little dude and I've shot hundreds of rounds of full power buck and slugs in a single day without any soreness other than to my thumbs from loading and to some seldom used arm muscles from holding up the gun so long.

As far as loads go I actually find buckshot gets my attention more than slugs, slugs come back harder but they don't seem to dig as much and don't seem to have the "harmonics" of buck loads.
 
The worst I have ever experienced was 2 3" slugs through my friend's Beretta O/U lightweight on a dare.

That seriously hurt.

Otherwise, I like recoil too, sometimes.
 
Used to be a recoil junkie, now not so much.

An old duck hunting buddy had a Spanish 12 Ga. SXS that the make escapes me.
There was a minor malfunction with the triggers, if you pulled the left or rear trigger first both barrels fired together, of course he neglected to tell me this as he set me up. We see this flock of geese coming in and he tells me "here try my shotgun" they were a bit high so he tells me to use the left barrel as it is full choke.

Being none the wiser I did, felt like a truck drove into my shoulder, as I tried to recover from the pain he sat on the floor of our blind laughing his ass off.
I gave up 3" magnums that day and hae never looked back.
 
I love recoil. I have finally got use to shooting my Remmy 11 87 with 3" slugs. 5 shots in a few seconds works for me. But then I am a pretty big guy so it takes a lot to knock me back.
 
try shooting a 3 inch magnum slug from the bench i have seen it open 870 actions to the point the shell ejected and the same thing with a 500 i am useto it now but it is funny to watch the newbies
 
.510 Wells wasn't too bad for recoil, neither was the .460 Weatherby or the .458 or even the .416 Rigby or Weatherby. It must have been the rifle because the .416 Remingon left me assuming that my right arm was there.....but not feeling it!

Shotguns are gravy to shoot! pistol grips, 3" mags, you name it, it's not that bad. Start pushing 600 - 700 grain bullets close to 3000 FPS and suddenly you want an ultra-heavy rifle, with a sling, and a wide stock, preferably with a pad.

Being a big guy simply means you are going to get a huge purple bruise because all the recoil must be transmitted through flesh before it gets to your skeleton. Not that I;m complaining, I still recover enough to do it again the next weekend.....you do get used to it!:rockOn:
 
Strangely, I never really noticed strong recoil in any of my guns when hunting. Too much adrenalin rush, excitation, I dont know...

But at the range is a different story, an afternoon of testing sabot slugs and buckhammers requires a good shooting position, as one said earlier.

For recoil freaks who think they have seen it all, go to Youtube and look for that crazy ".577 T-rex" video :)
