Our 2023 hunting video adventure - deer and elk with the 3030

Brave man, love your vids/channel. You're getting lit up a little on 24hr campfire, some are setting things straight however. ;)

that's an epic shot there, well done

Appreciate your comment, have thought a lot about your first statement in the context of asking myself “what is my motivation for choosing to share some of our adventures?” Is it narcissistic glory seeking/affirmation? Is it a sense of community? Is it the joy I get in the process of lugging the camera around and the feeling of accomplishment I sometimes feel when a plan comes together despite the self-imposed added difficulty associated with staging the camera around? I don’t exactly know why I share.

Am aware of the 24hourcampfire thread, and have been watching it with fascination. Have deliberately chosen not to participate; rather elect to watch passively as it feels a bit like a real-time microcosmic real-time study of the various dimensions around polarization that our civilization is so struggling with. Particularly interesting is the role/use of disinformation to demonize, and how easily some folks can go there despite facts that are right out in the open. Examples of this in that thread include:

  • Acusation: trajectory test reveals rifle is only capable of 9 inch group at 300 meters. Actual fact shown on video: group measures 3.75 inches
  • Acusation: Elk was luckily and sloppily hit in the spine back around its rear haunches. Actual fact = bullet path shown through upper thorax after transiting high front shoulder.
  • Implied acusation: what we did is illegal in Canada. Actual fact: complete compliance with the law.
  • Acusation: we must have wounded countless elk and selectively show only success. This is a good one because it’s difficult to refute unless somehow I provide verifiable providence and access to all footage we took this year. Essentially guilty till we can prove ourselves innocent.
  • Acusation: we are greedily motivated by cash that comes from YouTube clicks, and will do anything to get them. Actual fact - there are no ads on my channel because I’ve intentionally chosen to not monetize anything. No ad revenue. Rather, I share these as a labor of love in their creation, and like exploring and developing what I think is a unique style and the type of television I myself would be interested in.

It goes on, and folks in the camp who consider what we did grossly unethical use this strategy to demonize + fuel anger in their like-minded. Nothing I can do (or want to) about their perspective - I respect their right to form their own opinion, but seeing how easily they bend/distort/misrepresent facts is fascinating.

While choosing myself to watch it all unfold as a 3rd party observer only responsible for the initial stimulus, I appreciate the counter narrative in the thread, and if you participate in that then I’m grateful for your efforts. Am a bit sad about the polarization, but grateful for this yet another dimension of things to study and think about.

Cheers,

Jason/aka Brobee

I've said this before and elsewhere, and it bears repeating .
Ethics are based solely on emotion, not fact and have nothing to do with anything but personal preferences or false beliefs.
I know people who abhor anything but a magnum for anything but small deer because it is " unethical" , yet I have grown up with trappers and outdoorsmen who had three guns- a break action 12 gauge ( mostly), a singe shot ( mostly) .22, and either a 30/30 or a .303 British Lee Enfield and though nothing of it and had not issues killing moose , elk , deer , and yes Bison with them.
Sure it's a sample of one, but only because of the fact that it is on video, I know of more than a few hunters who have taken elk and moose with " inadequate, under powered guns" ! LOL
Well, done.......

I don’t think it was me who questioned? I get it completely. I have notes and word docs and spreadsheets on so many things I own and do. I’d go mad if I couldn’t constantly immerse in something, anything it seems. I’ve built things up and documented and shared also but you’re on an entirely different level.. It’s great that you share, more will appreciate than not.

Well done [the hunt and the video] The naysayers can pound sand, imho.

I have taken several head of game with the venerable old 30-30, and have
nothing but respect for it within it's effective range.

It was no surprise to see some of those bullets shed their jackets. I had a
160 FTX do that in a nice WT buck I shot at 80 meters. Killed the deer, but
bullet was in 3 pieces in the opposite side to entry.

Starting to put ideas together for next year’s adventure , and confess I kinda miss my first love, the 12ga. Which would be more interesting do you think: 12ga #1 buck for big game, also Brenneke special….or…more of the OG deerslayer 30-30 action? Please weigh in if you have a preference.

Brobee, Iove your videos! I learned a lot from your Shockwave/Tac-14 vids.

My vote would go to a Shockwave hunt with a Dixie Tri-Ball load .... :)

Maybe this inspires you ...

Great video Brobee! Excellent content, well edited & narrated. That's Wild TV worthy LOL! & probably better than some of the stuff on there. And anybody who figures a 30-30 isn't a large game cartridge, well, they can explain that to our forefathers.

what you could do with a 6.5 Grendel ;)

Where’s the like button?

Trying to tell folks for awhile lol. It’s almost as hard to get across as the vaxx is bad message lol. Slowly but surely the truth gets its way to the top. ;)

It is interesting what you did with the end of the 19th century interpretation of 30 grains of powder brobee, and by golly did you push the limit with a 21st century bullet. The 6.5 Grendel is the 21st century interpretation of 30 gr with a much better bullet to suit. 752 yard antelope longest I know of, 658 yard mature muley buck a guys daughter dropped and another guy dropped a mature bull elk at 405...so it does strike me that if you forgo the first love 12g for a proper cartridge this may be one you’d test. It’s been a hammer to 420 for me and my kids so far and watch it all in the scope.

Something tells me you might wanna try a ruger pc9 or 77/357 next though. Find the right ammo, test and then do as you do. I’ve got the word docs with all data and research all made up for both for years now and may never get around to playing but there’s surprising capabilities in both imo.
