Our Canadian Birthday

On 2nd Feb 1982 we arrived in Canada, at that time we were classed as Landed Immigrants’. Myself, my wife Pat and our two children arrived at Winnipeg Airport and were greeted by Winnipeg’s winter wind, my poor wife started to question our sanity. We had 8 large suitcases, some I could hardly lift, no overweight charges in those days. We knew we had to live out of our suitcases for at least 6 weeks which was when the rest of our worldly possessions would arrive, all 600 cu ft consisting of my tools, rifle box (Used as a coffee table for many years), kitchen ware, bedding , books and toys. Our first night was in a hotel the next day I purchased a used Ford F150 Supercab truck and we moved into a small rented house on the outskirts of Virden. Here we all rolled our sleeping bags out on the carpet and thought we were in heaven. Two weeks late our two dogs arrived, my Dad had looked after them until we were settled, it cost me more to bring my dogs to Canada than my wife. Pat really loves me when I tell people that. :)

When we had kids at home we always had a Canada Birthday supper to celebrate our arrival, now our kids have flown the coop so tonight Pat and I will treat ourselves to an evening out for a steak supper. Cheers Canada.

That's a nice anniversary to celebrate. Great story of a humble beginning. Given all you've accomplished, that just goes to show what's possible in Canada when you put your efforts in.

Canada became better for it, Congratulation and best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Hipwell, I will be celebrating my own 40 year anniversary in Canada on Boxing day.

Great story. Wow I wasn't even born in 82.

Came to Canada in 94. My mom worked like a dog to support us while I got used to the Canadian high school nuances.

I'll never forgot all she did to support us: Took transit for 2 and a half hours one way to work in a downtown office, then still had enough energy to talk to and feed her son.

Hard working immigrants are the salt of the earth IMO, and are 100% Canadian!

What no Came to Canada today sale???

On a serious note I would send a letter to Trudeau saying his dad forgot your jackets when you landed... followed by the sizes you require.

Enjoy the dinner with your wife “more for the dog” I am imagining the same level ok I get when I tell people “I got one good day outa my wife” we got married the night before her 30th birthday lol.

Thanks for making the jump and sharing your story!! From what I’ve seen in the short time I’ve been on cgn the firearms community is a better place with and because of you and your crew.
I’m left curious as too where you came from what you did there and what you did when you got here? Again thanks for sharing!

My background has evolved round firearms and farming both in the UK where I was born and raised and in Canada. The rest is a tale for another time.

Thank you for your story. My family has been on this part of rock since before Confederation and perhaps that's why we take the opportunity to live here for granted. Thank you for reminding me what we have here and that folks struggle to get to this Great Country that we complain about daily.
