Our Canadian Birthday

My Canadian Birthday is Feb 17th, 2006, landed in Calgary with my parents and 3 giant duffel bags, I had never seen that much snow in my life, got my citizenship in 2010, joined the army in 2012 :D

Happy anniversary John, thanks for sharing your story. The red maple leaf is often overshadowed by our southern neighbours, but there is no other place I would rather live then here with proud coast to coast fellow Canadians. Cheers !

Congratulations on your anniversary in joining the Canada club. It's literally one of those clubs that is world wide and whenever you meet another member you always feel a little more comfortable. From Europe to Asia and Im wearing a maple leaf and another member recognizes it, sit down have a beer or a friendly chat. Something I find in truly Canadian. I really don't think there is another club so large, welcoming or friendly as ours. Glad you're part of it. Cheers.

I emigrated 17 years ago and have never looked back (or even visited the UK since I moved here).
I still believe that if you work hard you can get ahead in this great country which is certainly not the case in the UK.

17 years for me too. You can take the boy out of Sunderland but you cannot take Sunderland out of the boy.;)

On 2nd Feb 1982 we arrived in Canada, at that time we were classed as Landed Immigrants’. Myself, my wife Pat and our two children arrived at Winnipeg Airport and were greeted by Winnipeg’s winter wind, my poor wife started to question our sanity. We had 8 large suitcases, some I could hardly lift, no overweight charges in those days. We knew we had to live out of our suitcases for at least 6 weeks which was when the rest of our worldly possessions would arrive, all 600 cu ft consisting of my tools, rifle box (Used as a coffee table for many years), kitchen ware, bedding , books and toys. Our first night was in a hotel the next day I purchased a used Ford F150 Supercab truck and we moved into a small rented house on the outskirts of Virden. Here we all rolled our sleeping bags out on the carpet and thought we were in heaven. Two weeks late our two dogs arrived, my Dad had looked after them until we were settled, it cost me more to bring my dogs to Canada than my wife. Pat really loves me when I tell people that. :)

When we had kids at home we always had a Canada Birthday supper to celebrate our arrival, now our kids have flown the coop so tonight Pat and I will treat ourselves to an evening out for a steak supper. Cheers Canada.

John

Thank you for sharing, what a great read!! Sounds very much like my Grandfathers journey here from England.

That's how Canada was built and that's why we are strong to this day

Quit a different immigration model today.

I hope you and Pat had a wonderful dinner out there on that beautiful frozen oasis you call home!!

Bruce
