glocks are fine, not the prettiest, but who cares? accurate, reliable, can get parts everywhere, great prices; you could do much worse. I've owned two glocks--a G17 and G21SF, still own the 21 and dont regret it a single minute.
walther make a fine polymer too, the P99, and its available in 40cal. Only thing, they tend to be about 50% more expensive than the glocks...but the walther ergo's are REALLY nice!
 
My opinion...for what it's worth...HK if you can manage it, but of the M&P or Glock?...definitely M&P and stick the Apex kit into it...world of difference. Makes you wonder how you did without it...

Well, for the record, and after checking out most of the POLYMER Handguns mentioned on this thread I purchased a purchased the Gen 3 Glock 22.

It was slightly used and I paied $600.00
