I arrived in Canada about a year ago with my wife who is a Toronto lass. I am a born and bred South African and I dedicated most of my life to a career with the SA Army as an airborne soldier and later as an operative for the South African Secret Service.

My main interest is in building up a collection and varierty of firearms for recreational use with the possibility of later joining a gun club in order to make use of a handgun or two. I had a collection of firearms back in SA but there were confiscated by the cops after I was forced to shoot an intruder who attacked us. This prompted our move to Canada. An unarmed white man is Africa is a dead man. In my collection I had an AK47, Seminov bolt action, Dragonov sniper rifle, Tokarev 7.62 mm short, Browning 12 gauge semi-auto, Brescia 12 gauge semi-auto and a Colt trooper .357 mag which was permanently attached to me.

I miss the freedom of firearm ownership as it was in SA but am happy not to be forced to carry and use a concealed weapon as a matter of survival anymore.

Welcome to Canada.
Sounds like you lead an interesting life overseas, hope you don't mind our slightly less temperate climate ;)

Welcome aboard. Please browse the board a bit, we arent great in Canada for guns, but we do have our fair share of nice rifles and handguns.

Welcome welcome, this should be a walk in the park compared to where you used to live. You should go have a picnic just to enjoy the fact that after a nice afternoon you get home alive and didn't hear bullets coming at you. (at least I hope that will be the case) Come out west when you have some time and visit this beautiful part of the country.

Welcome aboard Mother Goose.

I'm glad that you and your family are safe after that traumatic departure from SA.

I think that you will find that Canada is a very large country and you can get in your car and drive 5000 km from coast to coast with your family and be perfectly safe the whole time. There aren't many places in the world where this can be done.

Welcome. I'm sure you'll soon be in contact with some of the members here who are with the Forces. And they can help you reassemble your old collection up to a point.

"...were confiscated by the cops after I was forced to shoot an intruder who attacked us..." I wouldn't mention that when you get around to applying for Canadian permits. Not that you did anything wrong, but you don't want to give them an excuse to deny the permits either.
Knew another guy from SA, long ago, who had no rifle smaller than a .338 Win Mag. He said it was what he was used to.
"...but Toronto?..." Schomberg isn't Toronto.

Welcome aboard :). We do have our hiccups here with criminals, but its alot more safe then SA.
We as gun owners are trying to keep it that way.
Our selections to choose from here keep getting chipped away at, but you can still own some nice firearms.
No Ak's or variants though sadly are alowed to be owned here, enless you are a lucky prohib licence owner.
The closest you will come to an ak here is the VZ. 58, which requires a restricted firearms licence, and cannot be hunted with.
You can own the non restricted version of this rifle called the VZ. 858 which has been fitted with a 19 inch barrel to make it legal for hunting ect.
Cheers.

Welcome.......just remember our rights here in Canada are NOT safe!!!!! The left-wingers are violating us at every turn.......thanks for being a new gun-owner to our country.....please join an organization(CSSA) or (NFA) or your provincial hunting advocate (OFAH)eg. Thanks in advance and celebrate freedom!!!!!!

Hi Mother Goose....you're just down the road from where I am building my new house near Hwy 9/50. I have had enough of Toronto! Also I am working on a project in Kenya so I think I know what you're going through....I will likely be travelling there every few months for a week. Was there in February and it's a little scary but not too bad but I was isolated from the ghetto areas.

Welcome to Canada. Are you a member of any club here? You'll have to be if you want to shoot a handgun that you own. Aurora Gun Club is just a little ot the East of you. Let me know if you have any questions about local stuff.....

Got my restricted PAL before I got my Ontario drivers licence. But #### them anyway, I did what any responsible firearm owner would have done to protect life and limb. The bastard was in the house with an AK when the missus and I returned to our farm from a night on the town. I always went to town with my revolver and a semi auto 12 gauge. I smelt him (BO) when I walked into the house, got the wife stowed away in the kitchen and found the SOB in my bedroom where I double tapped him with a load of SSG.

Cops accused me with excessive use of force (he had a 30 round mag and was waiting in ambush), charged me with murder (standard procedure when a white kills a black) and took my firearms which were all legal except for the one 12 gauge semi which was given to me by mates in the Rhodesian Special Air Service post 1979.

PS: Dont worry, I have a clean SA police record and charges were dropped.
