So I got my Nork, what should I do next ? I guess a de-greasing is in order but using what?

Another thing is that the front sight seems to be cranked way over to the right side of the dovetail, do I need to drift this into the center?

Yup I have the stickies and am trying to find a way to get a couple of USGI fiberglass stocks into Canada as the last post I read indicated that Fred's were checking the legality of this.

For further clarification, I cannot put the stock in our dishwasher (too small); can I use simple green or another detergent on the stock to get the cosmoline out of it?

What should I use to degrease the metal? Simple green again? I have copious supples of isopropol alcohol lying around and I wonder if that could be used to clean the cosmoline off.

It's been 14 years since I purchased a rifle and all of my handguns have been delivered ready to go. The Norc looks as if it needs some fettling before it is ready to roll. And I am still worried about how far the front sight is offset.

My front sight looks cranked way over too, but it shoots straight.

Throw the barreled action and the other parts in the dishwasher for 20 minutes, it won't hurt them. I did it, and they were clean as a whistle. Don't put the stock in the dishwasher unless you want to refinish it, I left my handguard on the gas tube, and it's a lot rougher then the stock.

Fred's delivers fine

I received my first order a month ago, with the second (two fibreglass stocks) on the way. No problems either time, just keep the order total under $100.

Enjoy!

Sharkson, I tried to order from Fred's about three weeks ago (well under the $100 limit) and they refused my order. The only reply I got was that they're not shipping to Canada until they figure out if Canada Customs will allow the stocks to be imported.

I haven't heard anything back from them yet, and sent a followup email yesterday to see if they have any new info. When was your most recent order placed?

May 21st. Credit card billed May 25th. Ordered 2 the second time b/c I heard rumours about that. Hopefully it works out for you. Did you order online?

If Fred's is shipping USGI M14 stocks into Canada without U.S. Export permits, they are violating U.S. Law, and could face HEFTY fines.

Last year the M14 & M1 Carbine were re-classified as "assault weapons" in the U.S, so any ANY and ALL USGI parts require a U.S. export permit to be legally shipped out of the U.S.

Canada Customs doesn't care as long as duty/GST is paid.

The only risk to us Canadians is having the U.S. authorities seize your package before it crosses the border, and having your name and info flagged on their "list".

Thanks for the info Skullboy. I'd seen conflicting info on M-14 stocks and figured I'd contact Fred's directly to see what they said. I'll just try to find two synthetic stocks in Canada, as I'm not willing to risk getting hammered by the US authorities over a couple of rifle stocks (never had a problem with U.S. Customs and I'd like to keep it that way :D). I just wish they didn't cost 4 to 5 times as much in Canada as they do in the U.S.

It'd be nice if a dealer up here would import some stocks. There has to be a market for it. Marstar selling out their M-14 shipment before it even arrived (I got my name on one of them to add to the one I already own) has to tell you that they're a popular rifle.

Package arrived from Fred's today with two good as new synthetic stocks with metal parts. Wow. Great service fast and twice in a row.

Maybe the stocks are M1A stocks. I bought a stock from mikebaker and asked him the M14 prohib question. He said the ban only applies to M14 parts and the stock he sent me was a M1A stock.

Now is there a difference between the two...I have no clue. The only thing I know is that it fit my M14S with no problems...except for the auto switch hole.

Don't know about any differences, but Fred's clearly sells M14 stocks, hence the website address:

Cosmoline is just heavy petroleum jelly so any degreaser will work. Clean the cosmoline off with varsol or your Simple Green(DO NOT DUMP THE RESULTING SLUDGE DOWN A DRAIN), then clean it the way you clean any rifle, re-lube/re-oil, load up some ammo and go shooting.
Don't worry about the front sight until you see how it shoots.
Gunparts has a list of firearms on their site that the U.S. government requires an export permit for the export of parts. The M-14 is on said list. The M1A is not. A stock is a part hence the reluctance of U.S. retailers to sell out of their country. Calling an M-14 stock an M1A stock may be Fred's way around the U.S. law. Early M1A's did come with an M-14 stock with the selector cut out in the stock though.
