I want to purchase a precsion firearm that is capeable of very good numbers at 300 yrds. The range I belong to is equipped for this and I would like to give a shot. I very much doubt I will be going to any high end competition so Im not looking for a $5000 rifle.

Wish list.

Light recoil 22-250 or 223 ( I roll my own )
Laminate stock preferred
Left Hand (this will be a tough one)

I can shoot a right handed bolt action, as long as it NOT a Monte Carlo Stock.

Im looking at the:

Thompson Centre Icon Precision
Tikka
Savage 12 series

What are your thoughts or suggestions??

A 17 Hornady with a 10 moa base will get you out to 300 meters/yards ;) But I'm thinking that 223/556 will do the trick with o problems , no recoil and 'cheap' to shoot :)If you want to do things on the cheap side have you thought about a Stevens 200 in 223 with a Bushnell 3200 10X Mildot ?

Tikka Varmint in a model you choose comes in left hand and grab a fast twist .223. Load up some ammo and go.

For a factory rig, Savage in 223 with a 9 twist is hard to beat for the cost involved and the requirements you have.

I would go 12BVSS as my first pick for such a nice stock for the bench. From there, its all about what stock suits your taste. The metal is all pretty much the same.

The 12VLP is what I am using as a donor rifle now for a new F class shooter. Stock fit is decent but could use a taller comb. Accuracy has proven V bull capable out to 500m.

ALL Savage rifles do need proper bedding and a bolt timing for best performance and ease of use.

The Tikka Varminter is one of the most accurate factory rifles I have seen shoot. Very little needs to be done to tune it so you spend more upfront but have less to spend for tweaking. With an 8 twist, you can now shoot 80gr VLD's. Not a big deal at 300m but so much fun if this becomes 1000yds.

All of the above can have the potential to shoot 1/2min, maybe even better.

That is not as good as a true comp rig but a great place to start and learn. If you decide to go to an F class match and they have a factory class, you will be competitively set up.

If you would prefer something with better ballistics, a bit more shooting cost and no interest in a factory class, then the Savage F series is for you. 6BR would get my nod as this is such a wonderful cartridge to shoot. Stocks are very nice too.

Also remember that for what some of these rifles cost, you can assemble a Stevens with a prefit match barrel for similar money. Now you can choose all the specs you want AND get a better shooting rig.

Enjoy...

For a factory gun..........Savage 12 F-Class in 6BR or the Savage LRPV in 6BR. (1:8" twist)

This cartrige kicks the ass of everything at 300. end of argument :)

Depends on how good a scope you want and how much you want to see?

I feel the best entry level F class or paper punching scope is the Sightron SII Big Sky 36X. This is a sig step up from the older Sightron SII and Weaver fixed 36X that have been used in SR BR for years.

There are of course variables, ones with front AO, side parallax, this reticle and that reticle. Options galore.

So again, decide what you want the scope to do then see what features/brands/price can make that happen for you.

For optical qualities vs dollars spent (even compared to much more expensive scopes), the new gen of Sightron scopes are very hard to beat.

I do love fixed 36 power scopes, (I use and really like the Weavers) but they come with the problem of being too powerful on hot sunny days. Mirage can make these an unfriendly scope to use.

There are good choices in the 6-20X vairable and the 8-25X variable range. DO GET a proper target reticle. Stay away from mil dots and cross hairs. a 1/8 MOA dot is best.
