Well I was out today in search of fresh air, a little solitude and some critters..

Found all three :D

Also found a moose that was either rubbed to hell, or skin condition or something..

this was the 23rd moose I have seen in 1 week.

It's ticks that cause the mooses to go mangy like that, when there's enough they can even cause calves to die.

I've seen pictures of mooses that almost look scaly there are so many ticks on them.

Man that moose is HUGE :p

Oh wait, its just the picture :D

23 moose in one week - gotta love Alberta. I can hunt with 12 guys for a week in Ontario and maybe see 2 or 3 moose. :(

Likely ticks, 'tis the season. The moose die from exposure due to the hair loss and weakened condition if there is any infection from rubbing. Many adult moose die as well in bad tick years.

Sarcoptic mange is also present in AB. I saw a coyote with mange run across the highway up near Rimby 2 years ago. My wife and daughter were sleeping in the car so I figured a gun shot would not be appreciated, should have stopped and shot him anyway...

yup its probably wood ticks. Heres a few trail cam pics from last spring. We seen like 8 moose in the fall during hunting season and not one had any condition like this so it grows in by june.
