We have a 12x 14 heavy prospector tent and it is time to retire the airtite. I hate the thing, always have. Shelf life is too short and I have to sleep with one eye open to make sure it doesn't burn out. Because I don't wanna be re-starting the fire from scratch, in the middle of the night, in the long johns, after a long night around the fire with my good friend Mr Wisers.

We also do a lot of Nov hunting and - 15 is not unusaul. I like to have the tent warm when going to bed and then fill the stove and let it smolder just to take the chill out of the air. I have to fill the thing twice a night, too much. I wantsomething with a longer shelf life

Cabelas US has some nice ones, Cabelas Can has a couple. Any recommendations and where you got it?

$300 is the max in the budget.

Also, I see these 2 hole stoves and 4 hole stoves. What are the extra holes for?

Barrel stove.

If you have a welder or know a buddy that does and you can get hold of an old 45gal drum, it's pretty easy to make an air-tight stove, for next to nothing.

This stove was built by my buddy Sheldon. Welded it up with a TIG welder.

That stove has a spark arrestor below the pipe... just a round plate that reduces sparks getting into the pipe. We've got a dampener in the pipe, and then Sheldon built the air vent with a series of holes, then a larger opening, that is covered with a sliding gate.

If we load that sucker up just right, it will burn most of the night. Our available wood is all spruce or pine so it does burn out like 02:00 most nights. But if we had birch available, it might go all night.

The bottom is open though, so it needs a dirt floor, but if you welded a bottom in it, with legs then this style of stove could be used with a wooden floor also.

I call it a Billy Stove...
 
We started with a small homemade stove, burned up some fast though. I thought the airtite was a nice step up.

Our camp is in a birch stand, what a difference at night!!

I am looking at splitting the difference with one of these, I woudl like to find a Canadian supplier.

I think it will be too long, so we could reduce it to maybe 30 inches. I think this woudl make a great stove and we could leave it in camp and not worry about it. The parts wouldn't rust out and could be re-used on a new barrel
