Due to a deteriorating shoulder / nerve injury, my heavy recoiling rifle days are gonzo.
The only way I can shoot any rifle for more than a few rounds these days is with a pst shieeld, and a sissy bag if the rifle is any kind of a magnum.

Making up a lead slad type of rest so i can keep doing load development and handloading, two of the fun things I like to do when not actually shooting ....

Bigred is also a guy with shoulder injuries. His shoulders are ^&*() ed!! :D

He has been using a lead sled recently, and he reports good things about it.

Even I, (an internet tough guy) :D use a sissy pad for extended range sessions, there is really no reaosn not to investin a PAST or similar, they tend to take a lot of sting out of it. :D

I shoot a 308. A normal load of 150-165 gr is quite pleasant to fire- even from a bench. The HE ones hurt from a bench.
Might I ad that most people flinch because of the blast rather than the recoil aftermath.

an of you guys thought about installing some mercury recoil reducers for the big kickers?

I'll continue to use the 308 because it can reliably kill any N.A. game asides close encounters with polar and grizz. Even those two.... a rinco loaded with Black Hills 165 MHP and two full mags .....I'd try it.

I think we're kidding ourselves if we really believe that we shoot the big guys more accurately.
I'm not saying that people can't get really good at shooting heavy hitters but my 8x57 shooting 180gn 2650fps loads off the bench got sore.
If we talk lower recoil though we shouldn't be taking big bores with serious recoil reduction into the equation.
They've already been modded to make their heavy hitter shoot like a moderate recoil cal.

I really wonder if we haven't fallen victim to the gun writers need to produce articles-and start questioning the ability of our existing rifles to do the job.I know for a fact I shoot my 6.5x55 swede pretty well in the field[over 20 blacktails and a couple of black bear]and I put that down to being able to put my shot right back of the shoulders, or in the case of the bears, right on the shoulder. Most of these shots were within 100 yards or less.Would I be able to shoot as well with a much more powerful caliber or would I be gaining anything?I don't know.

As a noob when it comes to big rifles, I was a little shocked at the recoil my new 7mm RM produced. At first I spent quite a bit of time at the range breaking it in and the rifle isn't the only thing I "broke" in. I felt like I broke my shoulder!!

Now, after shooting it at the range in different positions, I'm "used " to it. From what I've been told, I don't flinch nearly as much and it shows on paper!

It may hurt a little bit, but I love it!!

It was in the truck, but I didn't bring it out- I didn't want you guys to think I was a sissy! :D
