Over-under 24 inch bbls

A year or more ago, Prophet River took in a "Special" from Huglu. I seem to recall the story was it was a order for a European distributor that for some reason was never delivered.

Pricing was good and the guns were mostly the same models that sell well here, so many of them flew off the shelves. But a few configurations were unpopular in Canada and some of those still sit there. The top gun on the Special list to this day is an example of that: fixed chokes, double triggers, and yes, 24" barrels:

Despite not moving Prophet River has not changed the price, but I have wondered more than once how motivated they might be to take an offer.

Interesting shotgun ...... I like the double triggers but the full chokes should be a deal breaker for an upland hunter. SK/IC would be a better choking.

You’ve probably already decided on an outfit , I bought a CZ featherweight this spring with 26” barrels and for the price I’m very happy with it . Fits me well and swings beautifully .

There is a lot of experience here that one can benefit from. The OP is free to ignore that advice but would be wise to factor it into his decision. :)

I have ultimately come to the conclusion that most (not all) questions are from people looking for endorsement of a path they have already chosen to follow.

Right ..... It's akin to the gunnut who posts looking for opinions on a firearm they just recently purchased.

My father used to have a sign in his workshop. It read as follows ..... "Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself.".

Maybe re-read the first post.
Clearly asked for who makes a 24” bbl OU.
Not.
“Hey I want to hunt grouse and I need some ones opinion on a barrel length”

The statement of shooting grouse in thick cover is just to give contrast.
If I was standing on a trap pad sure long barrels have a with long swings.
15yrd flush shots and at 20yrds the bird is gone not so much.
I wing shoot may chickens a year with my compact HR 410 with a 20”bbl just fine.

I have been hunting and shooting over 15years. Shorter lengths is what I prefer and as it’s going to be my gun it’s not really open for discussion.

But I’m probably wrong again.

That certainly is a strange fixed choke designation! I don't. I don't believe I have ever seen fixed f/f on a set of barrels that short.
However, if a fella was able to get it fir a good price, handoading larger shot sizes with spreader inserts could certainly help it open up the pattern.

If you are opposed to differing opinions other than your own, maybe Google is a better place for information than starting a conversation here among other experienced gun owners.

Typically, free flowing conversations go in different directions and threads like this one are very common here. Sorry for the side track. I bow out here.

Ive seen a few stoeger outback ou for sale lately. They have 20" barrels. I would think the sights could be taken off or at least altered. Or a hacksaw to a longer barreled gun

Here's my fast as Hell Citori Upland Special 20GA 24" barrels. Bought it new in 1990.

That's a very nice upland gun. Those interchangeable chokes probably make it feel/swing like 26 inch barrels of fixed choke.

Same as SKB Model 500 20 gauge O/U with 26 inch barrels, full pistol like grip.

Edit: I thought I would really prefer English straight grip. Looks so nice. But in my hand during movement I feel I am slower because less hand surface to turn or torque the gun differing directions. My preference is Prince of Wales or bag type grip. I am not even sure if I am saying that quite right?
But who am I to tell you what's best for you??

I had a huglu ventus woodcock with 24 inch barrels and battue sights. Very cool gun, well regulated and shot slugs into 2 inch groups at 50 metres

I’ve sold a lot of guns and it’s one of the few I regret letting go

26 inch or less barrels are out of fashion, despite being a good gun for thick covers. As a result, used guns with shorter barrels are usually a bargain.
I would not buy an expensive new over/under (think Browning or Beretta) with short barrels due to the immediate loss of resale value, as a used gun.

I own a Browning Citori 12 gauge with 26 inch barrels. It is still the same good gun for Skeet or hunting that it was when I got it 20+ years ago, but its resale value is lower than the same gun with 28 or 30 inch barrels.

Depends on what you do with your firearm, and how much value you put on what you hunt with.
- Unless I'm just testing the water and trying something new... I seldom care (nor consider) the resale value of any guns I've bought. And at this point in the game, the government banning this or that has me losing more $ than any un-popular gun purchases I've ever done... And I don't think my estate will care much about the residual value of this or that firearm.

The advantage of short barrels in thick cover is highly over-rated.

Have to agree with that one. Last weekend, took my father's old 101 for a walk in some pretty dense wood. And I can't honestly say the 30'' barrels were any more of a inconvenience than shorter barrels.

This been said, I still wouldn't mind a shorter barrel SxS, in 20g, with some nice walnut and engraving... But that's more of a "want" than of a "need"

Hey brybenn, if you drink enough of that speyside malt do you start to see 3 triggers on that gun? And those grouse look pretty good for having shot them with slugs!

Nice wood by the way... a CZ/Huglu I'm thinking?

Haha. All in moderation. Its a huglu 200b. The grouse fell to 7/8oz #6. I brought slugs and left the 4570 double rifle home. Turns out this gun places the slugs 1" apart side by side but 8" low at 30 yards. Patterns shot and buck shot perfectly though. So i just carried my 308 for checking baits. Carried the 20ga for walking trails and a bit of bush wanderings

If you ever had a blond-moment when grouse hunting, and grabbed the wrong shells, please raise your hand...

First hunt of the season. Just getting out of the truck to walk a lane, Oh! a grouse right over there... Quick, lets load the gun.
- 1st shot, boom (gee, that was loud. forgot to put my hear defenders)... grouse still bobbing like nothing happened. I must have over-shot.
- 2nd shot, aim a tad lower, boom (gee, that kicked a lot of dirt)... Grouse fly-off...

Reload... and realized that I was shooting slugs at that poor little thing. Good thing I missed G:

I have a Huglu 202B in .410, nice handling guns! I've never hunted with mine and only use it on sporting clays a couple of times a year.
