I have a few of these and I was going to try them out but someone on 1911forum said it was not advisable as it could alter the whole dynamic of the barrel movement and potentially damage the gun.
I was told these things were for a specific problem and should only be fitted by a gunsmith.
What's the scoop?

The barrel link in the 1911 pushes up on the barrel when the slide is forward. It is important that it be the right size so the the lugs on top of the barrel fit into the slide properly.

When the gun fires the barrel comes back & then the link cams the barrel down out of the slide. The proper size is important to the timing of this
operation for correct cycling & feeding.

Apparently the problem with oversize links is that they cause the lower 'legs' where the pin passes through to shear off, and they can hammer the leading edge of the locking lugs down. This occurs after a few hundred rounds in worst cases, so it may not be immediately apparent.
