Oversized bolt knobs are finally here!!!

I just got a call from my gunsmith last night and my rifle is ready for pickup with the knob. I can't get it till Friday and I'll get some pics

What is the purpose of a "Tactical Bolt Knob"? and why do I need one?
Just easier to grab and really useful with gloves on. Great for winter. My target guns have them. For general purpose they really serve no advantage. Don't have them on my hunting rifles as there is more bolt handle meat to snag on brush during my walks. I just like them when I'm shooting 100+ rounds a day.

ALLEN GUN WORKS
have you had any trouble with the savage bolt knobs when trying to install a new one.
the reason i ask is i had one done a couple years ago and the smith told me it was a pain in the a$$ because when he ground down the old knob there was holes throughout the knob.(almost like perosity) just curious

I've only done one so far and didn't notice any holes. The material is extremely hard though. I am doing another one this weekend so I will watch for it. I can't imagine that being normal though, it would definitely be considered a defect in my opinion.

A tactical bolt knob is also longer which provides more leverage. This makes it easier to operate and in a stuck case situation it gives you a better chance of lifting the bolt without having to grab something to hit it with.

At least thats what I've been told.;)

It does look identical to a Badger but there are only so may ways to make an oversized bolt handle, like trying to reinvent the wheel. Even in winter if you can't manipulate your bolt with gloves on there is a problem. Its not the bolt, its the issue of pulling the trigger with heavy gloves. I never seen the need for one even on a work gun but if someone makes a new gadget for a gun, someone will spend the money.

ever stick a bolt? I have and thank the good lord I had one that little extra is all I need to get it to lift, remember Murphy's law "Whatever can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time, in the worst possible way."

better to have it and not need it the need it and not have it,I dont really see the need for a steel one,do to the weight issues

AGW, the Savage bolt handles usually have porosity holes and often they are huge. This has never been an issue on a unaltered handle but can lead to difficulties when grinding and threading for a knob. I use 1/4-20 tpi and locktite, threading up to the bend.

When I look closer at the one I did, I can see there are small pores exposed. Due to the hardness of the material, and the fact that the bolt is not turned down to a diameter smaller than that of the thinnest part of the bolt, I don't see this ever being a problem.

I am using a 5/16-24NF thread and threading about 1/4" back from the bend. The reason for this is that the bolt knob blends much nicer at that point and it adds a bit more length. Length seemed to the main concern with the Savage.

Soon enough you will find a knob and lower shaft which is basically hollow. When you do, you can freehand a knob like this one and save the handle. Same factory sweep back just not shown in the pic.

Good prices by the way,

Well it wasn't the prettiest install, but the bolt is on there solid.

This was my gunsmith's first ever attempt at installing a bolt knob so I'm sure he will get better with practice.

Rather than turn the knob he cut it off and tapped and welded on a threaded bolt.

you can see some dimples in the weld but I'll be painting over that anyway shortly

Mike,

What is an approximate turn around time for doing an install on Rem700P? My bolt handle comes a little too close to the magnification dial on my Falcon 4-14x44FFP for my liking and this knob should do the trick.

I am gone all week and I have about 5 installs waiting to be done. I should get most of them done in the next week or so, so any new installs coming in I would say about a two week turn around. Maybe faster, but I have a lot of travel booked in the next few months.

Oversized/Tactical Bolt Knob
