I was taking to my brother, about the SMLE Mk3 that I just bought, and I knew he had an old 'Enfield'. I never really knew what it was, only that it was full military configuration. Hell, he didn't even know what he had, comes to that... he lives in Ontario, so it's not like I can go over to his house to look at.

Anyway, he dug the old jewel out and got to looking at it. It's a basically complete, original Winchester W-1 P14 Pattern Enfield. He bought it at a police (O.P.P.) gun auction, back when he had just got out of college and had very little money.
He wanted something cheap to go deer hunting, and bought it for next to nothing.

Pretty cool rifle and from a quick search I did, there's not too many around. In fact, the only one I did find, was one with a mis-matched bolt, Remington P14 at P&S Militaria.

Thought some people might appreciate this story.

A typical story from our "pre-gun control" hysteria. Now the Police cut everything up instead of getting some revenue from that stuff.

At that time, there were lots of surplus stuff at good prices and we never even dreamed that these things would even reach half of the prices that are being asked today.

Great story.

I'll have to ask him to check it out next time Iam home. It's been years since I saw that gun. I also forgot about the case he made for it. I have one he built for Heffs B.S.A here.

^ Yeah, I haven't seen that thing in 30 years or something. I never realized what a great old rifle that was. I'm going to handle it in the summer, when we drop into Ontario for a visit.

Interesting, in the pics the (matching) serial numbers are clearly visible on the bolt and receiver.

Nice rifle. Rear sight possibly replaced with an aftermarket one?

Looks like the front volley sight is still there. How about the rear volley sight? Could we get a couple of pictures of those?

If they are intact, this rifle probably stayed in Canada and escaped the Weedon repair program.

^ buffdog, the rear sight was replaced by my Dad; he was a master machinist, and crafted an aperture sight that you can see in one picture. The original sight mount was loose, and they couldn't secure it, so it would always wiggle out of alignment.

Story is the rifle was a 'tack driver', with the sight my Dad built.

I am pretty sure that my brother kept the original sight. I sure hope he did...

I've told him he's an idiot if he threw it out.
