Had a chance to take it to the range and fire off a box of FMJ Sellier Bellot 174 Gr , all worked well but shot pretty high at 100 meters even with the rear sight down to its lowest setting but I would guess they are set up about a 300 yard zero. Also the targets I had were the orange cross type and I found it kind of hard to see with my old eyes.
Are the black circle type targets better to see with the battle sights and maybe a bigger circle, anyways it shot Ok and I am looking forward to casting some boolits which I would guess with the lower velocity will shoot a little lower, the rifle is just for punching paper and wacking steel

We used to shoot the LEs with the "tin hat" targets.

You can use a regular black circle, but cover up the bottom half with a sheet of paper. Result is MUCH easier to aim at. Big black blob (when your eyes get as old as mine) is just too much room for the sights to wander about inside!

Another thing to consider: a black square, rather large. You aim at a BOTTOM CORNER of the thing, placing your Sight Blade with a CORNER if it just touching the aiming-square's CORNER. Very useful for checking a rifle's grouping..... or your own.

Yes, the rifles ARE designed to shoot high. They are just about dead-on at 300. The way they are sighted gives you a safe 300-yard point-blank range if you are shooting at a standing man..... which is what they were designed to shoot at.

Hope this helps.

Finally had a chance to sight mine in decently last Sunday. Not exactly the tack driver I had hoped for, but no problem smacking 3x4 metal plates at a hundred. Would go hunting with it with confidence.

Yea I would not call mine a tack driver either but at 100 meters the target I had was difficult for me to see a definite aiming point, I did manage a two inch group but I am confident that I can work up a good cast load and with an appropriate target do better, hey if we wanted something to drill a tiny little ragged hole we would pick a different firearm, like another said it is the history that is a big part of it.

I have used S+B in my 8x57 Yugo mauser. It is loaded considerably hotter than north American loaded ammo like Remington, at least in the 8x57. I shot a group with factory Remington 170 grain and then another 5 shot group with S+B 196 grain. The S+B group was several inches higher and the recoil was enough to make me utter a few choice words about the steel "recoil pad" on the M48.

just for kicks, try a box of Federal blue box 180 grain or Remington 180's in your 303 and see if it shoots closer to the point of aim.

I am going to do that , I need brass anyways, what I plan on doing is shooting cast, last night I slugged the bore at .313 so will have to get set up with a mold and sizer dies

The P-14 usues the same front sight as the No1 Mk III SMLE which are availible in different heights. With the 200 yards setting it should be 3" high at 100 or the center of the bull with a 6 o'clock hold. This sounds odd but many of these rifle shoot better at longer ranges. A P-14 the benches 2" at 100 may well bench 3" at 200.
