P14 with m17 bolt??

Here's another option for a young fellow thats still learning the ropes...

Buy a 26 in barreled P-14 or M-17 sporter for 150$, with a decent bore. Replace rear sight with a no gunsmithing S+K instamount (70$). Install scope of choice. Install aftermarket trigger(50$). Learn to glass bed the stock. Learn to reload. Learn to shoot.... There is a good chance you'll kick your buddies arse at the range.
Spend the balance of your 1000$ celebrating with women and beer.
 
As mentioned, I have built a variety of LR target rifles off these enfield P actions. Still have a 300RUM, a 338 Mystic, and 450Alaskan. There is little issue getting these actions to shoot sub MOA at very long distances.

I stopped building rifles on these actions when the Stevens came out. The economics and performance just doesn't make sense to me.

There are lots of sporterised and rebarreled enfields at gunshows. Some have really nice stocks too. All will be selling for WAY less then you can build. Think $200 to 450 FINISHED. Very well finished rifles in interesting chamberings will still be around $700 to 800.

Odds are by the time you pay for a pipe installed, trigger group, stock and work, bluing, you could have purchased a Savage 12FV for way less money. The Savage would shoot better/as well and have a great trigger too.

If you want to build up a rifle, the Stevens action stripped is so cheap. With the same investment, you will end up with a rifle that will challenge the very best custom BR actioned rifles out there. This you can easily do within your $1000 budget.

If you can and want to do the work yourself, go for it. The enfield is easy to work off. If you are paying, you would be better to invest your money in something that has great performance and better resale value like the Stevens/Savage. Plus, so much easier to modify later on.

Always up for the women and beer!! but the women always seem to cost me to much . I think p17 is right with this i will go for the savage then as i get cash I will get the p14 compeletly done up. So whats everyones say on this savage? never been a savage fan but for the price and what i hear about them i can convert. whats the after maket like for upgradeing down the road?
 
I used a Savage action on my Palma rifle in the World Long Range Championship held in Ottawa this last August.

This action is undoubtely the best bang for the buck out there.
