P14s & 17s in odd calibers.

I bought a P14 a few months ago in .600 JDJ, which is a .577NE round with the taper removed and .620" bullets seated. My main interest in this rifle was how would it feed this huge rimmed cartridge. But it does feed and very smoothly. It holds two in the mag and a third in the chamber if you're so inclined. It is not a pretty rifle, but it sure is smooth and packs a wallop. I have only tried a few loads so far with bullets from 750 grains to 1200 grains tested. Accuracy is surprising, but I have not shot it at any long ranges yet. I just aquired a mould for it and will test that shortly.
The other day my buddy picked up one of these rifles in .35/303 Brit and it's a beauty to shoot. It feeds well and is very mild and accurate. A rebore on the original barrel and shortened.
The more I see of the P14/17, the more impressed I am.
Does anyone else have one of these in an odd caliber? Or another action in something else out of the ordinary.
 
I am still saving pennies to put a barrel on my .25-303. have dies, P14 action, stock, the works.

they are pretty simple, robust actions. a bit on the heavy side when compared to modern sporting arm actions, but they can be had dirt cheap and make a fun project to tinker with.

that .35-303 is supposed to be a very sweet cartidge, I belive Bits-of-peices has the reamer.... Corlanes has a .25-303 reamer
 
Was at the range about 10 days ago and met a young gent who had a P14 in 25/.303.......weighed about 10 lbs +....24 in heavy barrel and "old fashioned"
bench style stock........stated he' d picked it up for about $330....

He hadn"t worked up any loads yet and was just forming cases with COW.....
Was a very nice rig...

hs 45-70......your mileage may vary
 
I have a P14 made in 375 H&H that weight in around 8 pounds. I also had one rebored and chamber to 358 Norma a few years ago. It shot okay.
Just bought a M10 Ross that is rebored into 35/303 hope to do some shooting shortly with it. I also have a M10 a 6.5 X 303 imp made by the orginal Elwood Epps in the late 50's

John, I am a great fan of the M05 Ross and the M10. I am thinking on a .35/303 for an M10 coming now. I have an M05 and M10 I have been "using" for a coulple of years. Very underated action. Another CGN member told me that running a .300Wby reamer down the M10 Ross used to be common making a .300Wby with a 311" bore out of them.

I can't see why that wouldn't work, my father had a M10 built in 300 Wby one time. said it worked fine. I beleive you have to us a M10, on the M5 they use a differnt thread, I would call it a half thread and then 2 screws to hold the barrel in. I haven't seen much done on the M5 action most work I seen was on the M10 action.

What type of dies does one use for such a beasty?

Also does one simply swap the barrel for the smaller caliber, or line the barrel etc?
Or would it be easier to use some sort of sabot load method, as used in the old 30/30 Remington Accelerator?

Any belted magnum case fits the P14 bolt face and any standard (o6) non magnum cartridge fits the P17 bolt face. Grab a couple of both actions and you will never be wanting for projects!
 
Rob, of what I can find out they used a 16 buttress thread, I haven't got a barrel out of a M10. Checking the book some of the M5 rifles also used this thread, I will have to check my MK II** match rifle to see if it is.

I have a four year project on the go.
It is an 1899 Savage lever gun, half octogon barrel.
She was 303 savage, but the bore was destroyed, once I am done it will be similar to a 37-303. Basically a 303 Brit case necked up to 375, and shortened to 38-55 case length so it will cycle in the rotary.
Should make for an interesting brush gun, hope to have it running for it's 100th birthday next fall.
 
The gun came with RCBS dies, basicly I just neck the cases down with these dies and fire form. It been a while since I have made brass up for it, may have used a 7 X 57 die first to bring the neck down. The case is full length so I don't have to shorten it.
