P1888 bayo scabbard

Your scabbard looks like it may have been modified as it has a belt loop hanger. I don't think they used a different hanger for Canadian issue but you never know. The British used scabbards of blued steel-mounted black/brown leather, with a single elongated frog stud. Still a nice scabbard. Time for some research.

hier ist my p1903,(sorry for the previous 1888...)with the scabbard,original hardware (i was told) but the leather is from a p1907,i can read:B.H&G 1942 on it.
upper,the sewed leather frog looks like the one on the ross bayo scabbard.

'bout a year ago , I seen a GRI P'03 at a gunshow ( without scabbard ) and I passed on it thinking it was abit too much $$...oh well ...
The scabbard I shown here was at the bottom of a glass case at a local fleamarket where the price with little haggling was quite reasonable .
Soon as I seen it I knew it was mine .
As far as a South African P'03 , what kind of stampings will I look for ?
...or would a GRI P'03 be "somewhat" correct ?

The teardrop button on this one isn't marked. I had a Wilkinson with the '96 date as well but I don't remember if it was marked. This blade doesn't have a maker's mark. Th butt is stamped "6 DCOR" and "498" Which I'm assuming is a regimental mark of some sort, although it doesn't look like it has been issued. It was still in cosmoline when I got it.

Glycerin; 666 is likely to be the rack number of the bayo's original rifle.
One of my P1888 bayos has the number 640 stamped on the butt of the handle, on the teardrop button of the scabbard, into the leather of the Oliver pattern frog and the rifle's leather sling. These in turn all match the rack number marked on the tang of the butt plate.

The scabbard is the Land pattern, Mk1, for the Pattern 1903 bayonet. List of changes para 11811, approved 25 August 1903, and interchangeable with the P1888 bayonet.
So it would be correct for either one.
NOTHING to do with the Home Guard (unless they got some on issue)
